Caitlin Clark has spent the past several weeks playing under the shadow of a looming suspension. But bad news came on Saturday against the Chicago Sky. A brief moment with an official, where Clark accidentally bumped into the referee.
According to the rules, a player must receive a technical foul for bumping into a referee. But there has been some massive outrage on X after analysts and fans learned that Clark did it accidentally.
WNBA World Reacts to Controversial Call Against Caitlin Clark
Speaking to reporters after the game, Clark addressed the call directly.

“She said I ran into her,” Clark said. “I’ve already watched it on tape so we’ll let the league decide but it wasn’t intentional and anything. So I’m hoping it’s getting rescinded. I’ll see you on Tuesday.”
Fever head coach Stephanie White, who was also given a technical for arguing the call, confirmed afterward that Indiana plans to appeal the decision in hopes of getting it overturned before the team’s game against the New York Liberty on Tuesday. It would not be the first attempt this season.
The Fever have appealed multiple technical fouls assessed to Clark throughout the year, including two in the weeks prior to Saturday’s game, though none of those appeals have been successful so far.

Barstool Sports’ Dave Portnoy didn’t hold back and blasted the league. “just go start your own league already. Sick league,” he wrote on X.
Another analyst, Colin Cowherd, also criticized the decision. He said, “Caitlin Clark gets a T for accidentally bumping into a ref. This league truly believes they get picked on. Nope. That’s not it.”
Basketball fanpage ‘BrickCenter’ wrote, “The WNBA has the WORST refs in sports They confirmed Caitlin Clark received a tech for accidentally bumping into a ref.”
NFL legend Dez Bryant chimed in as well. “CC got fouled and got a technical foul.. straight [expletive],” he said.
During the 90-86 win, Clark put up 26 points, along with 11 assists and 4 rebounds. It was yet another impressive double-double for the superstar on a night where she went 7-15 shooting as well. Clark lived up to her moniker as a sharpshooter, making 5 out of 6 attempts from beyond the 3-point line.
If the technical stands, Clark would become the first player suspended under the WNBA’s technical-foul limit rule since the rule was implemented.
Indiana currently sits in the middle of a crowded playoff race, making Clark’s potential absence from Tuesday’s game against New York a huge blow.
The league has not indicated when a decision on the appeal is expected, though previous rulings on Clark’s technical fouls this season have typically come within a few days of the appeal being filed.
