With extension talks showing little progress and the New Jersey Devils continuing to surface in league-wide speculation, questions surrounding Hughes’ long-term future have become impossible to ignore.
Jason Demers Casts Doubt on Minnesota Wild as Quinn Hughes Rumors Swirl
Former NHL defenseman and Olympian Jason Demers delivered one of the strongest opinions yet on Minnesota’s outlook, hinting that the ongoing Hughes situation is a reason for concern.
While sharing his projected Central Division standings on X, Demers placed the Wild in 6th place and wrote, “To early to call Central standings… I am not bullish on the Minnesota Wild right now and 5 Central teams are making the playoffs 💯.”
Minnesota acquired Hughes from the Vancouver Canucks in a blockbuster trade during the 2025-26 season, expecting the former Norris Trophy winner to anchor the franchise for years. Instead, the focus is now on his unresolved contract status.
Reports indicate the Wild and Hughes have yet to reach common ground on an extension, with negotiations appearing to stall.
This has generated continued speculation that Hughes could eventually seek a move to the New Jersey Devils, where brothers Jack and Luke Hughes already play. Bill Guerin has acknowledged the ongoing discussions, but the absence of meaningful progress has only kept the rumors alive.
Despite the uncertainty, Hughes’ impact in Minnesota has been undeniable.
After arriving from Vancouver, he immediately transformed the Wild’s defense by producing 53 points in 48 regular-season games with the team. He also tied Kirill Kaprizov for the team lead with 15 points during the playoffs while helping Minnesota reach the second round. His offensive production quickly established him as one of the franchise’s most influential defensemen.
The uncertainty surrounding Hughes has also complicated Minnesota’s long-term planning. If the organization becomes convinced that a long-term agreement is unattainable, management could eventually face the difficult choice of exploring trade options instead of risking losing an elite defenseman for nothing.
This possibility has connected the Devils to nearly every major rumor because of the Hughes family connection and New Jersey’s collection of young assets.
