Now entering his second season of play, Shedeur Sanders understands what’s at stake this year. Perform well, and he just might be named the next starting quarterback of the Cleveland Browns.
Recently, his father, Hall of Fame player Deion Sanders, paid Shedeur a visit during Browns training camp. For whatever reason, Deion’s appearance drew a decent amount of criticism. Yet, from the sound of it, the Browns’ QB couldn’t care less about the outside perception.

A lot of attention was put on the Browns, and specifically on the Sanders family for creating what some thought was an unnecessary spectacle. Yet, the Browns’ QB essentially told Cleveland media that there was nothing to it, just a bit of “good” family time.
“It was good,” he said of Coach Prime visiting and watching practice. “I’m overall focused every day by the practice. So the outside, nothing else really matters whenever I’m on the field and that. But whenever I’m off the field, of course, I’m excited that I seen my dad. I hadn’t seen him since the summer maybe. But yeah, nothing matters when you’re between the lines.”
In the heat of competition with Deshaun Watson for the Browns’ starting quarterback job, Sanders, as noted, is “focused” on his duties on the field, not on who may or may not be in the stands.
After all, how is this any different than when his dad goes to see him play rather than practice? Wouldn’t that, under more pressure, produce a stronger emotional flow?
From the way he made it sound, Shedeur has been hard at work, focusing on trying to become the best quarterback he can be. In essence, getting to see a friendly face who he knows is wholeheartedly in his corner had to feel good for the 24-year-old QB.

As he said, “nothing matters when you’re between the lines.” That’s something the Sanders family knows all too well, having dealt with many distractions throughout their sports careers.
Even Watson’s QB coach, Quincy Avery, didn’t take any issue with Deion being in appearance at Browns camp. While Watson hasn’t provided his opinion, chances are he’s aligned with his personal QB trainer on this one, too.
Despite the spirited competition, Watson and Sanders haven’t been at each other’s throats. If anything, they seem to be emphasizing being a good teammate to one another over any sort of personal battle with one another.
After all, they’re both in the same race, trying to help the Browns win as many games as possible. In the end, “nothing else really matters.”
