Angel Reese and Paige Bueckers might have unintentionally triggered something that could birth a whole new debate. The two stars find themselves at the center of a brewing controversy after a friendly $400 wager spiraled into a league-wide discussion.
The post-game conversations immediately shifted from the Atlanta Dream’s 82-81 victory over the Dallas Wings at College Park Center to a potential disciplinary fallout off the court.
Angel Reese Holds Paige Bueckers to $400 Wager
The Dallas Wings hosted the Dream on Wednesday night and, in a hard-fought battle, lost by a point. Leading the Wings’ scoring was Arike Ogunbowale with 24 points, followed by Azzi Fudd with 20 points.
Bueckers clocked 37 minutes and dropped 16 points, 4 rebounds, 6 assists, 1 steal, and 1 block on 6-of-11 shooting from the field and 1-of-5 from beyond the arc.
For the Dream, Alisha Gray emerged as the night’s highest scorer with 25 points, followed by Angel Reese’s double-double of 22 points and 12 rebounds on 9-of-18 shooting from the field.
During the post-game press conference, Reese credited her team’s defensive effort for restricting Bueckers to just 16 points and addressed the friendly wager.
“Yeah, I’ll be requesting my Apple Pay after this,” said Reese.
“Paige is a great player. When you hold her to 16 points, it’s tough. She is just so good, and her mid-range is obviously so good. But I think our defense tonight, Rye did a good job, Borlase, with what was thrown at her, and everybody that was thrown at her tonight, I think they did a good job holding her together.
“But I’m glad we just got this win as a team. It felt really, really good. And just going into the next game, I feel like it gives us a lot of confidence going back home.”

While both Reese and Bueckers might have viewed the wager as harmless banter, social media reactions say otherwise. The official WNBA account initially shared a clip from All-Star Weekend featuring the players discussing the casual bet as a promotional step, but deleted it after facing heavy online backlash.
Under Article XIV, Section 5(C) of the WNBA Collective Bargaining Agreement, players are forbidden from wagering anything of value on league competition, be it directly or indirectly.
Anyone found guilty of violating these rules, “in the sole discretion of the Commissioner, will be subject to a fine, suspension, and/or dismissal and disqualification from any further association with the WNBA.”
What started as lighthearted fun during All-Star Weekend has taken a dramatic turn for the worse.
The fans are demanding accountability and pushing for an investigation, making Commissioner Cathy Engelbert’s already shaky position as the league’s head even more precarious.
