Mike Vrabel has been the biggest story of the New England Patriots’ offseason, and for all the wrong reasons. The Patriots head coach has faced scrutiny over his alleged affair with former The Athletic insider Dianna Russini after intimate photos of the pair, even dating back to 2020, were leaked.
While Russini resigned from her role at The Athletic, Vrabel has continued coaching the Patriots, although he took a day away from the team during the NFL Draft to attend counseling. With training camp and the 2026 season approaching, one NFL analyst believes there is only one way Vrabel can finally move past the controversy.

The Patriots are coming off their best season since Tom Brady left the franchise, reaching the Super Bowl behind a remarkable campaign from quarterback Drake Maye. It was Vrabel’s first season in New England, as he guided the team from a 4-13 record the previous year to a Super Bowl appearance while earning Coach of the Year honors.
However, Patriots analyst Andy Hart believes it will be difficult to replicate that success given everything that has transpired during the offseason. He argued that the controversy has damaged Vrabel’s credibility as a leader, while also predicting that Maye is unlikely to match the production from his breakout 2025 campaign.
“There’s no way that Drake Maye can be as good as he was a year ago, right? Statistically,” Hart said on 98.5 The Sports Hub. “Everybody’s almost aware, yeah, you had a special year, especially since it was your second season. There’s going to be a regression to the mean for you, whereas Mike Vrabel, this isn’t about football, or it’s not just about football. This is about hypocrisy. Like, that word was thrown around like he’s a hypocrite as a leader of the football team.”
However, Hart believes winning solves everything. If Vrabel can guide the Patriots to a strong start, he thinks the Russini controversy will quickly fade from public discussion.

“So we know one thing around here: winning covers up everything,” he added. “So, if he wins, this all goes away, right? If they start 3-1 and then 5-2, and they’re just stacking up wins with a tougher schedule, proving last year was not a fluke, no one’s going to be talking about Dianna Russini in the offseason. But if they scuffle, his motivations and preparations will be very much questioned.”
New England’s success last season was driven largely by an explosive offense led by Maye, and the unit appears even stronger after the Patriots revamped their offensive line and added A.J. Brown to headline the receiving corps. While the defense, which ranked 11th last season on PFN’s Defense Impact Rankings, remains a question mark, the team’s biggest challenge may be its schedule.

But if the Patriots stumble out of the gate, the scrutiny surrounding both his leadership and the offseason scandal will only intensify.
