Saints QB Tyler Shough Highly Regards Hall of Famer Drew Brees

As offseason preparations ramp up, teammates aim to build chemistry ahead of the new campaign. Most notably, quarterbacks and their receivers try to get on the same page, and as such, much of their early preseason prep centers around spending time together.

The Saints are no different, as Shough and his receivers are set for an interesting getaway. ESPN’s Katherine Terrell reported on the event, citing Brees’s hand in the exercise.

“The second-year QB said he’ll go to Oregon first before heading to California for what he called a quarterback and wide receiver throwing retreat,” Terrell wrote. “Shough said he’s excited about the week, calling it ‘an investment.’ Shough reached out to Pro Football Hall of Fame 2026 enshrinee and former Saints quarterback Drew Brees for some tips about where to go and how to get access to a field for workouts in the Del Mar area of California.”

Brees and Shough’s mentor-protege relationship started when the Saints drafted the Louisville quarterback in the second round of the 2025 NFL Draft. Shough said he leaned hard on Brees’s wisdom when he first got to the team as a backup to Spencer Rattler. The second-year pro said the Hall of Famer is “the pinnacle of being a quarterback,” as he looks up to the veteran.

“He [Brees] might be there for a little bit, but I couldn’t say for the whole time,” Shough said. “But I think he was pivotal in setting everything up with the workout facility and the throwing location.”

Brees is a former All-Pro and 13-time Pro Bowler with a Super Bowl and Super Bowl MVP award. He spent his early years under Brian Schottenheimer’s father, Marty, with the San Diego Chargers before making his way to the swamps of the south, where he built a legendary career under Sean Payton.
