Two-time Pro Bowler Trevon Diggs remains unsigned deep into the NFL offseason after being released by the Green Bay Packers in January. Diggs, who was claimed off waivers by the Packers, only played two games for them after the Dallas Cowboys released the cornerback five years after drafting him in the second round of the 2020 NFL Draft.
What Led to Trevon Diggs’ Release?
After being selected No. 51 overall by the Cowboys, Diggs quickly established himself as one of the most dominant cornerbacks in the league. He had a breakout sophomore season, tallying 52 combined tackles (43 solo), 21 passes defended, and a league-leading 11 interceptions in 16 games, earning first-team All-Pro honors.
After signing a five-year, $97 million extension in 2023, things fell apart for Diggs in Dallas. He tore his ACL, ending his season prematurely, and underwent knee surgery the next season to repair a lingering injury, once again being ruled out for the remainder of the season.
As a result of numerous injuries, Diggs has played in only 22 games over the last three regular seasons, leading to a sharp decline in his production, which distinguished him as one of the best cornerbacks in the league.
He also refused to board a team flight after a Christmas Day game against the Washington Commanders last season, culminating in his release. On the field, Diggs seemed to have lost a step and was repeatedly taken advantage of by opposing wide receivers.

Commanders Floated as Landing Spot for Diggs in Free Agency
In his latest column exploring the best fits for defensive NFL free agents, Bleacher Report’s Alex Kay linked the Commanders with a move for Diggs.
“Trevon Diggs may have regressed significantly in recent years, but it wasn’t too long ago that he was widely regarded as one of the NFL’s best cornerbacks,” Kay wrote. “He’s now lingering in free agency with his value at an all-time low, but there’s reason to believe the 27-year-old could still turn his career around.”

“Joining the Washington Commanders could instantly rejuvenate Diggs,” he added. “Although it would likely take an injury for Diggs to take on more than a part-time role, he could end up being an instrumental signing for a Washington squad that has hopes of bouncing back in a big way following a down 2025 campaign.”
The cornerback’s brother, former New England Patriots wide receiver Stefon Diggs, is also a free agent after dealing with a litany of off-field legal issues, and recently revealed that he has had conversations with the Commanders.
“We’re kind of figuring it out, working through some things,” Diggs said. “I did have a small piece of me, like, ‘Damn, it would be great to come home and play in front of the fans I used to play in front of as a young adolescent in college and just kind of doing something for the city.’ Hopefully, things do work out, we’ll see how it goes.”
According to PFSN’s CB Impact Metric, Diggs posted an impact score of 60.6 last season, ranking 123rd in the league. Hopefully, he will be able to get his career back on track with his new team.
