The Montreal Canadiens have made no secret of their desire to strengthen their center position, and several names have surfaced as possible solutions. As teams across the league evaluate their rosters ahead of an active summer, one intriguing option has emerged from a division rival.
However, any potential move comes with added complications that could influence how negotiations unfold. This latest wrinkle surfaced through insider reporting, adding some context to an already fascinating situation.
Canadiens-Linked Center Pavel Zacha Holds 8-Team No-Trade List as Bruins Weigh Options
Pavel Zacha is also among the more closely watched names on the trade market after NHL insider Pierre LeBrun reported that the Boston Bruins are evaluating interest in the veteran center while still prioritizing a contract extension.
The 29-year-old is entering the final season of his 4-year, $19 million contract and is coming off the best offensive campaign of his NHL career. His combination of size (stands 6’4″), versatility, and top-six production has naturally attracted attention from teams seeking help down the middle, including the Canadiens.
LeBrun emphasized that Boston is not actively trying to move Zacha despite the growing interest around the league.
“In a market starved for centers, the Bruins are listening on Pavel Zacha,” LeBrun wrote in The Athletic. He quickly added that “there’s a big difference between listening and wanting to move him,” noting that Boston’s primary objective is still to work out a long-term extension.
This distinction is important because the Bruins appear to be gathering information rather than shopping the player. Zacha becomes eligible for an extension on July 1, and the outcome of those negotiations could determine whether trade discussions gain momentum.
LeBrun also revealed another key detail that could affect any future deal.
“Zacha has a no-trade list that allows him to say no to eight teams, and I’m told he submitted that list to Boston on April 1,” he reported.

The existence of that list gives Zacha partial control over his future and creates an additional hurdle for interested teams. It remains unclear whether Montreal is among those eight teams.
The Canadiens’ interest makes sense from a hockey standpoint. Earlier on Wednesday, The Athletic’s Arpon Basu identified Zacha as a strong fit behind captain Nick Suzuki. Basu noted that the Bruins center offers faceoff ability, size, and the versatility to contribute on both special teams units.
Boston also understands the value of the asset it possesses. Zacha produced 30 goals and 65 points in 78 games last season while carrying an affordable $4.75 million cap hit. In a market lacking quality centers, that combination significantly increases his value.

For now, the Bruins hold the leverage.
They have cap space to pursue an extension, and multiple teams have reportedly contacted Don Sweeney about the player. If negotiations on a new contract progress smoothly, trade speculation could fade quickly. If they stall, however, Zacha may become one of the most sought-after centers available this summer, with Montreal likely remaining among the interested observers.
