The scandal involving New England Patriots head coach Mike Vrabel and former NFL reporter Dianna Russini still lingers in the back of the people part of the league. The story might’ve died down amid OTAs and minicamps, but the NFL community is still keeping a close eye out for any updates.
Mike Vrabel, Dianna Russini Scandal Can Still Deliver Massive Blow to Patriots
Russini’s career was flipped on its head following the publicization of her alleged affair with the Patriots’ head coach. Vrabel, meanwhile, continues life in Foxborough after leaving the door open to taking more time away from the team.
Three-time Super Bowl champion Mark Schlereth did a Q&A on X, opening the floor for questions from the NFL community. Tony Farmer, who has been ambitiously investigating the Vrabel-Russini scandal, asked:
“How concerned do you think the Patriots are about The Athletic’s investigation into the Russini conduct? Mike seemed to leave the door open at his presser to taking more time away. Do you think that report could be a thorn in the Patriots side?”
The Athletic, which formerly employed Russini, previously announced it’s investigating the scandal. However, since the investigation is still “going to take a few more weeks,” it has sparked more speculation about the situation.
As for the Patriots, though, information that might surface during the investigation could impact how they handle the situation from their end. If Vrabel’s conduct is too much of a stain on the franchise’s name, it could very well lead to the head coach’s exit.
Schlereth affirmed the sentiment, noting the severity of the investigation. “I think the entire league is nervous,” he replied to Farmer.

As people await Vrabel’s fate, Russini has long since faced hers, having resigned from The Athletic soon after the bubble burst. She parted ways on her own terms, stating, “This media frenzy is hurtling forward without regard for the review process The Athletic is trying to complete. I do so not because I accept the narrative that has been constructed around this episode, but because I refuse to lend it further oxygen or to let it define me or my career.”
How the remainder of her career as a reporter pans out will be interesting to watch. Farmer, for one, weighed in on the situation, expressing little confidence in her return to journalism.

“It’s possible [that she continues to be a reporter],” Farmer said in May. “I’m open-minded. You know, America is a forgiving country when people own their mistakes and things like that, so it’s possible. But when she deleted her Twitter, to me, that was a signal that she was closing that door, that’s just my opinion.”
With the possibility of Russini delivering her tell-all ahead of the new season, this story still has a way to go to the NFL archives.
