Over the last two seasons, one of the more perplexing dynamics in the entire NFL has been the seeming divorce between the San Francisco 49ers and Brandon Aiyuk. A star wide receiver out of the first round of the 2020 NFL Draft, he has distanced himself from the team.
Now, after months of speculation, Aiyuk finally explained his side of the story. However, for most people watching the clip, including former NFL stars, there is a genuine worry about his well-being.
Emmanuel Acho Raises Issue About Brandon Aiyuk’s Mental State
Despite consecutive 1,000-yard seasons to his name, the 49ers were hesitant to offer Aiyuk a huge extension in 2024. Eventually, as he threatened with trade demands, the team acquiesced to the tune of a four-year, $120 million contract.
Unfortunately, he played only seven games after signing his new deal before tearing his ACL and MCL. Since then, though, Aiyu has gone completely AWOL from the franchise, with San Francisco placing him on the PUP list before the 2025 campaign and then on the reserve/left squad list.
During that timeframe, the social media activity from the former All-Pro has been confusing, to say the least. Finally, he broke down his side of the story, claiming that the 49ers were scared of him and “They running from that belt that’s on the way.”
By most accounts, it seems like an oversimplification of the situation, or a twisted version of it. Emmanuel Acho, who served as a linebacker for the Philadelphia Eagles in the league, was more brutal in his understanding of Aiyuk’s comments.
In a recent segment on “Speakeasy,” he explained his position: “Brandon Aiyuk, to me, he’s just showing signs of mental instability. There’s no more kind, delicate way for me to put it. He’s showing signs of mental instability.”
Breaking down the timeline of events, he added, “You’re recording yourself doing something illegal, driving over 100 miles an hour, for which I believe you get arrested for it. Now, you’re recording yourself on social media with these kinds of implications that they’re holding you hostage, and they’re running from the belt.”

Even willing to accept his notion, Acho couldn’t make sense of it. “But who has the belt? Because in your analogy, they were the parent, but now you are the parent with the belt? I’m confused.”
“He’s showing signs, and then burning $27 million is probably the greatest sign of mental instability. So, he’s just showing signs of mental instability, which first and foremost, that’s actually what worries me. I want to make sure that he’s good before we start talking about playing ball.”
Aiyuk’s last fully healthy season came in 2023, where he recorded 75 receptions for a career-high 1,342 yards and seven touchdowns. According to PFSN’s WR Impact Metric, he posted an impact score of 92.7 that year, ranking fourth in the league.
The entire situation has continued to escalate for more than a year. It remains to be seen if it will finally find a conclusion. But for the time being, it doesn’t seem like the two sides are anywhere near finding a common ground on the matter.
