‘Clown Behavior,’ ‘That Was a Lie’ — NFL World Reacts As Brandon Aiyuk Breaks Silence on 49ers Standoff

Finally opening up on his side of the story, Brandon Aiyuk does not find a lot of supporters against the San Francisco 49ers.

The San Francisco 49ers have been embroiled in a unique situation with Brandon Aiyuk. While disagreements between a player and his organization are all too common across the NFL, the star wide receiver has been away from the team for far too long.

For most of that time frame, there wasn’t any credible source about the reason for the dissonance between the two sides. Now, the former Pro Bowler has finally explained his side of the story. Unfortunately, the majority of the NFL world isn’t siding with him.

Why Brandon Aiyuk Is Struggling to Find Supporters in His 49ers Dispute

A first-round pick in the 2020 NFL Draft, Aiyuk was an immediate threat for the 49ers. Becoming a starter in his rookie season, he tallied two solid seasons before truly taking off in 2022.

Surpassing the 1,000-yard mark, he added over 2,300 receiving yards and 15 touchdowns over the two seasons, leading to a four-year, $120 million contract extension before the 2024 season.

At the time, there was a ton of speculation about the deal, with San Francisco seeming hesitant about the extension and Aiyuk garnering interest from a ton of other locations. Ultimately, though, it came to pass, but it turned out to be a disaster.

An injury-plagued 2024 campaign saw him finish with just 374 receiving yards in seven games. Moreover, after he tore his ACL, he was officially placed on the PUP list in the 2025 offseason. Throughout the season, reports of a lack of participation made the rounds.

Eventually, the 49ers voided the guaranteed money in his contract for 2026 before placing him on their reserve/left squad list. During that time, Aiyuk hasn’t explained his side of the story. Instead, peculiar activity on social media has been a theme with him.

Now, in his latest video, he warned the organization, “Man, stop running from the belt. The belt coming. You scared, they scared. The truth is, they scared. They’re gonna say BA did this, BA did that, BA did that s**t allegedly, but what they’re not gonna say is BA s*ck at football, cuz they know how I get it.”

Reinforcing his warning, he repeated, “They running from that belt that’s on the way. It’s inevitable, it’s coming.” Unfortunately, for most of the 49ers’ fan base, the situation has become more of an annoyance.

Even Coach YAC was short in his breakdown, saying, “Brandon Aiyuk breaks his silence on IG. More clown behavior from BA.” Sterling Bennett of the “957 The Game” podcast was even more critical of the former Arizona State product.

Taking to X, he wrote, “Meanwhile, he’s failed to answer phone calls and texts from his coaches and teammates, refused to the show up to the facility, and has an arrest warrant hanging over his head. Heed your own advice, brother.”

Grant Cohn of Sports Illustrated, though, had a different take on the behavior and comments from Aiyuk: “Brandon Aiyuk doesn’t sound crazy. He sounds like someone who hates his employer with a passion.”

However, some were still willing to listen to the Aiyuk piece of it. Josh Taylor wrote, “I said this on my Brandon Aiyuk video the other day. Aiyuk is still with the 49ers. Kyle Shanahan cancelled mandatory minicamp due to 100% attendance at voluntary workouts. We all know Aiyuk wasn’t there, so that was a lie. Shanahan is avoiding Aiyuk reporting at all costs.”

For a large chunk of the fans, though, the entire situation had escalated for far too long. As a result, folks like Joe Shasky of “957 The Game” just wanted an end to the entire ordeal. He explained his thoughts on X:

“I know 49ers fans want every single draft asset & you want something tangible in return, but I just want this Brandon Aiyuk story to be over. The constant “stuff” is just exhausting. Move on. Stop letting this linger & let’s turn the page to an exciting 2026 season. I’m over it.”

It remains to be seen how the entire situation comes to a close. The football world has seen disgruntled stars return to their organization. But as the situation has gotten increasingly strange and ugly, a potential trade could also be in the works.

For a team desperate to add a wide receiver to their mix, Aiyuk could be a potential solution if he can regain his form once again. Given the increasing competition in the league, that could force a few teams to take a swing at him in the summer.
