Texas Tech quarterback Brendan Sorsby’s future remains in limbo after the NCAA denied his request for reinstatement earlier this week. Sorsby checked out of the inpatient rehabilitation program in Arizona last week, as the issue of his gambling addiction has taken center stage in college football.
The Red Raiders reportedly lured Sorsby to Lubbock with an NIL package valued at approximately $5 million, making him one of the best-paid players in the country.
Bruce Feldman Details College Football’s Support for the NCAA in Brendan Sorsby’s Case
During Thursday’s segment of “The Audible” podcast, analyst Bruce Feldman gave an update on the general sentiment around college football on Sorsby’s continued eligibility battle.
“The Texas Tech president came out and said that they’re gonna appeal it, obviously they spent at least $5 million to get him,” Feldman said. “At one point, they were 11/1 pick to win the national title and now, after this, without him, they would be 25/1. I’ve seen player columns from people who are just like, ‘This is something you can’t have.
“‘You have to have rules here.’ You feel bad that Sorsby has had to go through this addiction process and come out on the other side of it, but if you’re not enforcing rules on it and accepting the punishment that comes with it, then where are we? Because then you’re giving people a green light to do it because there are no repercussions on it.”
Sorsby’s attorneys filed an injunction against the NCAA in the Lubbock County District Court to reclaim his eligibility, and they are seeking to resolve the issue of the quarterback’s future by June 15 due to the looming deadline to file for the NFL Supplemental Draft by June 22.
Why Paul Finebaum Sides With Brendan Sorsby Over the NCAA
During Wednesday’s segment of the “Get Up” show, ESPN analyst Paul Finebaum blasted the NCAA for seeking to take away Sorsby’s eligibility permanently due to the organization’s stance on gambling.
“I think he should have been suspended for a couple of games, but to keep him out for the whole season, I think, is wrong,” Finebaum said.
“And while what he did on paper is terrible, we’re talking about the NCAA, the most hypocritical organization in the history of mankind, coming down on somebody for gambling while they have their own side gambling deals and while gambling is pervasive everywhere.”
Texas Tech coach Joey McGuire won the race for Sorsby’s commitment after an impressive season for the Cincinnati Bearcats last year, which involved 2,800 passing yards, 27 touchdowns, and 5 interceptions, while adding 580 rushing yards and 9 scores, earning a PFSN College QB Impact score of 88.2.
