Now, as the 2026 season approaches, the impending matchup between LSU and Ole Miss is shaping up to be a psychological war zone.
Why Josh Pate Is Warning LSU Head Coach Lane Kiffin
According to national analyst Josh Pate, Kiffin can run, but he cannot hide from the narrative waiting for him. Pate, on “Josh Pate College Football Show,” dropped a hammer on the upcoming matchup, signaling that the pressure is entirely on the new LSU head coach.
“Now, knowing Lane Kiffin like we do, I think he’ll shy away from the spotlight a lot,” Pate observed. “And I think he’ll try and downplay that and try and temper things. And if there’s one thing that I correlate with Lane Kiffin, it’s a subdued nature about this sort of thing. But nevertheless, I don’t think Ole Miss folks have forgotten.”
The foundational tension of this game lies in how the public perceives these two powerhouse programs versus how they actually stack up on paper. Vegas and analytical models currently view LSU and Ole Miss as virtual equals on a neutral field. However, public perception and human polls often favor blue-blood branding.
“To me, the big takeaway there is, Ole Miss and LSU are viewed pretty close to even on a neutral field,” Pate stated. “And I don’t know that that’s what the preseason rankings will look like. I would assume preseason rankings would have LSU significantly higher… My guess is LSU is going to be significantly higher. I disagree with that.”

So, when Sept. 19 rolls around, it won’t just be a high-stakes SEC game. Along with an emotionally charged game, it marks Kiffin’s first true road test of the year, taking his new LSU squad directly into the teeth of an unforgiving Vaught-Hemingway Stadium crowd.
“This is the first road game of the year for LSU,” Pate concluded. “Also, how do you handicap the intangibles here? That’ll be as big an external factor game, I think, as we’ll see all year.”
