The scandal involving Mike Vrabel and Dianna Russini has clouded what should be a promising offseason for the New England Patriots. Just four months removed from a Super Bowl 60 appearance and a Coach of the Year award, Vrabel has spent more time answering questions about photographs at an Arizona resort than about his team’s path back to the top of the AFC.
The noise has been constant since Page Six published photos of Vrabel and Russini at the adults-only resort in Sedona on April 7, and due to it, NFL insider Ian Rapoport was recently asked about Vrabel’s future on the “Between the Tackles” podcast, and he gave a clear answer.
Ian Rapoport Sees No Change Coming for Mike Vrabel in New England
Rapoport believes that despite the noise, Vrabel will remain the Patriots’ head coach and build on his impressive first season with the franchise.
“Based on the actions of the organization, which has been, you know, Vrabel has been out there talking, he has given some press conferences, he has given some statements,” Rapoport said. “I haven’t seen anything that would deviate from the plan for him to be the head coach next season and moving forward.”
“I mean, this is an organization that you know certainly has supported him; he is an excellent coach,” he added. “They also are an organization that, for better or worse, have dealt with their share of controversies and scandals, have, you know, stood by when at all possible, you know, and to me that seems to be the way it’s going to be going forward.”
The timeline of events has been relentless. After the initial Sedona photos were released, Russini resigned from The Athletic on April 14 amid an internal investigation. Additional photos then surfaced showing the two together at a New York City bar in March 2020, when Vrabel was coaching the Tennessee Titans, and Russini was an ESPN reporter.
Vrabel also revealed that he has had some difficult conversations with his family and the organization. He then skipped the third day of the 2026 NFL Draft to begin counseling.
What protects Vrabel from more serious organizational consequences is what happened on the field last year. In his first season with the Patriots, he coached a 10-win turnaround, taking the Patriots from 4-13 to 14-3 and an AFC championship.

New England lost in the Super Bowl, but with Vrabel as the head coach, the future looks bright for the team, and quarterback Drake Maye, who has also publicly supported his head coach.
For now, though, the plan is clear, with Vrabel set to continue as the Patriots’ head coach. However, things could change if the team struggles massively or if more details about him emerge closer to the season and become too much of a distraction for the franchise as well as for Vrabel.
