‘You’re Not Paying That Price’ — Senators Insider Stops Brady Tkachuk Trade Rumor in Its Tracks

The trade speculation surrounding Brady Tkachuk refuses to slow down. After another disappointing playoff exit, the Ottawa Senators captain has once again become one of the NHL’s hottest rumor topics.

But while fans and analysts continue to debate whether Ottawa could eventually move its franchise cornerstone, one insider believes the latest rumor went way too far.

Ottawa Insider Shuts Down Latest Brady Tkachuk Rumor

After entering the postseason with plenty of optimism following a strong late-season push, Ottawa was swept in four straight games by the Carolina Hurricanes. Tkachuk ended the series without a single point in four games and also took several costly penalties while finishing with a minus-4 rating, making him an easy target for criticism after the collapse.

Although both Tkachuk and the organization have tried to quiet the speculation, the rumors have only grown.

While discussing Ottawa’s search for a backup goaltender, Senators insider Bruce Garrioch brought Tkachuk’s name into the conversation.

“Jesper Wallstedt of the Minnesota Wild is a fan favourite amongst the Ottawa base. If the Wild are going to deal him, and it’s doubtful after the club’s playoff performance, then GM Bill Guerin will want a huge return.

“The belief is that the Wild would want Ottawa captain Brady Tkachuk as part of a package for Wallstedt. You’re not paying that price for a No. 2 goalie.” Garrioch reported.

That statement effectively shut down the rumor.

In Garrioch’s view, if Ottawa were ever to entertain moving Tkachuk, the return would need to be franchise-altering, not centered around a backup or developmental goaltender, regardless of potential upside.

Tkachuk himself also attempted to put the trade speculation to rest during his end-of-season media availability. “I feel like I’ve answered this hundreds of times… none of those things ever came out of my mouth. Quite honestly, it’s just getting frustrating. It’s becoming a distraction, because I have been fully committed to this team, to the city,” he said.

Still, it’s easy to understand why Brady Tkachuk’s name keeps popping up in trade rumors. The Senators’ captain has two years left on his deal at an $8.2 million cap hit. And he isn’t eligible to sign a long-term extension until July 2027. Across the league, teams have become more careful about letting uncertainty around a star player drag on for too long.

The situation involving Quinn Hughes in Vancouver showed just how quickly rumors can take off, even when an organization publicly says it has no plans to move its franchise player.

Tkachuk’s emotional style of play only adds fuel to that conversation. When Ottawa struggles, his visible frustration often becomes a focal point, and rival teams know elite power forwards rarely become available without warning signs emerging first.

For now, Brady Tkachuk remains the leader and driving force behind the Ottawa Senators. But if the team gets off to another slow start next season, speculation about his future will continue to grow.
