Shilo Sanders sparked a firestorm this week when he responded to veteran Cleveland Browns reporter Mary Kay Cabot’s take on the team’s quarterback competition with a comment that drew immediate backlash.
After Cabot reported that Deshaun Watson had taken the lead over Shedeur Sanders during voluntary minicamp and opined that the Browns should declare Watson the starter as soon as possible, Shilo fired back on Instagram with a blunt response. “Go make a sandwich, Mary.”

Sanders’ comment went viral within hours and drew widespread criticism from media figures, and it was perceived as misogynistic and unnecessary.
Sanders then doubled down on his Twitch channel, accusing Cabot of having “an agenda” against his brother and claiming her reporting was driven by “so much emotion.”
Deion Sanders finally weighed in on the controversy, and his response made it clear he has no interest in engaging with the social media outrage cycle.
“Y’all over here trippin about what somebody said on the internet,” Deion said. “I ain’t got time for that. I got too many things I’m praying for.”
The response is consistent with how the Hall of Famer has navigated external noise throughout his coaching tenure.
At Colorado, Deion has told his players to respect women and address them as “miss” instead of by first name, which is why Shilo’s comments came off as a big surprise to many. Skip Bayless noted as much, saying he didn’t “think father will like that his son did that” and that the remark only made things harder for Shedeur in Cleveland.

The underlying football question remains legitimate. Watson, who missed all of 2025 with a torn Achilles, reportedly looked sharp during minicamp and has been taking a majority of first-team reps.

Shedeur, a fifth-round pick in 2025, went 3-4 as a starter during his rookie season and is expected to enter the training camp as an underdog in a competition the coaching staff appears to be tilting toward the veteran.
That conflict will unfold during training camp and the preseason. Whether Shilo’s outburst remains a distraction for Shedeur inside the Browns facility or diminishes as the football season begins may rely on how much the Sanders family continues to attract attention off the field.
