How Alexandra Eala Responded to Leylah Fernandez Comparisons

Eala revealed she had not paid much attention to the comparisons before being asked directly in a media session in Stuttgart. “I’m not really familiar with those comparisons but I think Leylah is a great player,” she said.

Eala pointed to Fernandez’s breakthrough moment as a defining achievement, adding, “Obviously she did the final in US Open a couple years back so she’s a trailblazer in her own way. I’m not so close with her, we’ve had a couple of interactions but she seems like a nice girl so not mad about that comparison at all, she’s a good player.”

Similarities and Differences Between Alexandra Eala and Leylah Fernandez

The parallels between the two rising stars are easy to spot and have fueled discussions in tennis circles. Eala and Fernandez have deep ties to the Philippines, though they navigate the professional circuit under different flags. The most obvious commonality is their Filipino heritage; Eala was born and raised in the Philippines, while Fernandez is a Filipino-Canadian born in Montreal.

Both players are left-handed, which they use to dictate play with sharp angles, and both entered the professional ranks as highly decorated juniors. Eala famously won the 2022 U.S. Open Junior title, while Fernandez captured the 2019 French Open Junior title.

The primary differentiating factor between the two is their professional timeline and national representation. Fernandez, who is three years older, experienced a meteoric rise earlier in her career, most notably reaching the 2021 U.S. Open final at just 19. She represents Canada in international competitions and was a key figure in their historic 2023 Billie Jean King Cup victory.

In contrast, Eala is a trailblazer for the Philippines, consistently representing her home country in the Asian Games and the Billie Jean King Cup. In terms of achievements, Fernandez holds the edge in hardware and top-tier experience. She has secured five WTA singles titles and reached a career-high ranking of world No. 13.

Eala, however, is currently rewriting the record books for Filipino tennis. By early 2026, she broke into the top 30, becoming the highest-ranked Filipino player in history. Her recent milestones include reaching the semifinals of the Miami Open and winning her first WTA 125 title in Guadalajara.
