Rising Filipina star Alexandra Eala offered a candid account of a tense moment during the Australian Open, revealing how an overwhelming crowd left her briefly trapped and concerned for her safety. Speaking about the incident, Eala described how what began as a routine practice session quickly escalated into a situation where she felt physically at risk, prompting her to call out for space as fans pressed in from all sides.
Growing Fan Frenzy Around Alexandra Eala Leads To Tense Australian Open Moment
The 20-year-old has rapidly become one of the most talked-about names on the WTA Tour, drawing increasingly large crowds wherever she trains or competes. Her steady rise, including a career-high ranking of World No. 29 early in the 2026 season, has translated into growing fan engagement.
From packed practice courts to vocal support at tournaments like Indian Wells, Eala’s popularity continues to surge even before she has broken into the Top 10 or claimed a Grand Slam title.
Detailing the moment, Eala explained how the situation unfolded after a training session at the National Tennis Center in Australia. “In Australia at the NTC, I trained outside and I trained on one of the courts, and I did not have security, which next time I will probably make sure they’re there,” she said during a recent appearance on “The Player’s Box Podcast.”
“But after training, it was full. I came in and it was full, and I went out of the court and the traffic of people was coming because they wanted me to sign. I couldn’t move, right?”
She described being pushed backward toward a wall as the crowd continued to compress. “And there was a wall back here, and if the traffic of people was coming and they couldn’t see what was happening over there, they were all just pushing. They were all kind of pushing you against the wall. And I was getting closer and closer to the wall. I was like, ‘Oh, that’s kind of dangerous.’”
With her father and coach nearby, Eala raised her voice to regain control of the situation. “And then I was with my dad and my coach, and I just shouted. I was like, ‘Wait.’ I was like, ‘Give me some space. Give me some space or I’m going to get run over.’ And then they all stopped, and I made my way through.”
Eala’s Recent Results at the Miami Open
On the court, Eala recently concluded her Miami Open campaign. The Filipina star was seeded 31st and received a bye into the second round, where she defeated Laura Siegemund 6-7(6), 6-3, 6-3. She then overcame Magda Linette 6-3, 7-6(2) to reach the fourth round, where she lost 0-6, 2-6 to 13th seed Karolína Muchová.
Eala is set to begin her clay-court campaign at the Linz Open, which will take place from April 6 to 12 in Austria.
