Quarterback Aaron Philo successfully joined new Florida offensive coordinator Buster Faulkner in Gainesville. Philo’s move has been expected since Jon Sumrall was hired as head coach in December 2025, but questions still linger as Florida heads into the 2026 season.
Aaron Philo Takes the Spotlight as Gators Offensive Line Faces Questions
On Monday’s episode of “The Pat Dooley Show,” Pat Dooley welcomed Steve Spurrier for a wide-ranging discussion covering the latest Florida sports news. The conversation turned toward the Gators’ football program, as Dooley spoke on both promising talent and ongoing concerns.
“Florida had a scrimmage on Saturday, I didn’t go, obviously,” Dooley said (8:20). “I was watching basketball, but I talked to people who went, and the bottom line that everybody said was the offensive line is a problem. And that’s what I kept saying when I talked about how Florida’s over-under was 6.5 in Vegas, and I don’t think I would bet the under. The point is, can you block anybody? Can you and who’s going to be doing that?

“And apparently they’ve, you know, they brought in some guys and one of them’s going to start from center, but guys just aren’t getting it done, and they’re not really happy with it. The physicality is not there. Everything else I think on this team is pretty good. Quarterback Aaron Philo, the starter. I don’t think there’s any question about that. You know what you have at running back. Your wide receivers, you got so many of them.”
Florida’s offense finished last season ranked 56th nationally with a PFSN College Football Offense Impact Metric score of 76.9. The unit struggled with pass protection and penalties, issues that the new coaching staff is working to address through depth building, rotation, and competition.
According to The Independent Florida Alligator, Sumrall and his assistants, including Phil Trautwein, are placing a heavy emphasis on developing a player-led culture to foster cohesion and accountability along the offensive line.
As for Philo, he has had a limited role in his first college season. He took snaps in 2025 behind former starter Haynes King. In appearances for Georgia Tech, he completed 59 of 102 passes (57.8%) for 938 yards, two touchdowns, and three interceptions.

Despite limited game experience, Philo’s playmaking potential is notable. His 3.4% explosive play rate over the past two seasons would rank among the top 30 nationally if he had enough snaps to qualify, according to TruMedia analytics. Philo is determined to leave a mark with the Gators and said that his 2026 squad will be “attacking every single day,” showing energy and effort on every play.
Fans will have a chance to see him in action at the upcoming Orange and Blue Game on April 11, which will serve as an early glimpse into Florida’s evolving offense.
