NFL Executives Accuse Ravens of ‘Slow Play’ on Maxx Crosby’s Physical Before Pulling Out of Blockbuster Trade

The Baltimore Ravens backing out of the Maxx Crosby trade sparked rival accusations of deliberate slow-play manipulation.

The Baltimore Ravens pulled the plug on a franchise-altering trade for Maxx Crosby, and rival front offices are refusing to buy the official excuse. General manager Eric DeCosta agreed to send two first-round picks to the Las Vegas Raiders on the Friday before free agency opened in March.

By Tuesday, the Ravens backed out of the deal entirely. They cited concerns about a failed physical following a January meniscus repair. Rival executives surveyed the wreckage and saw a much more calculated maneuver.

The Timeline of Maxx Crosby’s Failed Physical

The timeline of the collapsed deal raised immediate red flags across the league. Teams finalize blockbuster trades and immediately rush the player in for medical clearance to lock down the asset.

The Ravens waited four agonizing days. That gap spanned the entire NFL’s legal tampering period. Rival executives noticed the delay and ripped into the Ravens’ convenient timeline in a recent piece by Mike Sando of The Athletic.

One front-office source doubted the truth would ever surface but noted the optics suggest that Baltimore deliberately delayed the medical check.

“I don’t think we’ll ever find out the answer,” an exec from another team said. “I would not put it past them to agree to this trade and then slow-play the physical.”

Another executive was even more blunt about Baltimore’s operation. “If you really wanted the guy, you would get him in there for his physical as soon as possible,” they said. “You would pull your doctors off whatever they were doing. That’s easy. It was advantageous for the Ravens to slow-play the physical and keep open their options. That is why I believe the narrative.”

Baltimore president Sashi Brown publicly insisted the team did things the right way. Meniscus repairs are notoriously tricky for heavy defensive linemen, giving Baltimore plenty of plausible deniability.

How the Trey Hendrickson Signing Shifts the AFC North

Holding the Crosby trade in limbo gave Baltimore a massive fallback option. The Ravens used that Tuesday window to pivot directly to Trey Hendrickson. They scooped up the former Cincinnati Bengals star without giving up a single draft pick.

Hendrickson signed a four-year, $112 million contract featuring $60 million in fully guaranteed money. Baltimore filled its edge rusher void, kept its premium draft capital, and effectively used the Crosby agreement as elite leverage.

The move completely shifts the power dynamic in the AFC North. Head coach Jesse Minter now has a veteran to anchor his pass rush. DeCosta keeps his premium draft capital to build out the rest of the roster. Those two retained first-round picks give the Ravens terrifying flexibility heading into the draft.

Las Vegas sits on the opposite end of this chaotic sequence. General manager John Spytek and head coach Klint Kubiak find themselves backed into a corner. The Raiders clearly deemed Crosby expendable enough to agree to a blockbuster trade. Now, they have to welcome him back into the locker room and pretend nothing happened.

Crosby’s timeline does not align with a Raiders roster undergoing a massive reset. Las Vegas signed veteran Kirk Cousins under center, aiming for immediate competitiveness despite a defense riddled with holes.

Other general managers know Spytek is trapped. Teams will try to lowball the Raiders for Crosby, weaponizing Baltimore’s medical evaluation. Las Vegas refuses to look foolish twice in one offseason, but the market dictates they should shop him again.

After all, Crosby finished the last season ranked second in PFSN’s EDGE Impact Metrics with a 95.3 grade (trailing only Cleveland Browns superstar Myles Garrett, who posted a 95.6 EDGEi grade).
