Steelers Predicted To Select QB Garrett Nussmeier in 2026 NFL Draft Given Aaron Rodgers’ Uncertain Future

The Pittsburgh Steelers are predicted to draft LSU QB Garrett Nussmeier as a developmental successor to Aaron Rodgers in 2026.

Garrett Nussmeier did not have the season he envisioned for 2025 after suffering an abdominal injury at the beginning of training camp. That hasn’t stopped some teams from showing interest in the ex-LSU quarterback.

Steelers Predicted To Take Garrett Nussmeier

Nussmeier had a strong junior season as LSU’s starting quarterback in 2024. Per ESPN, he threw for 4,052 yards, 29 touchdowns, and 12 interceptions. His production caught the attention of NFL scouts as a potential first-round draft pick. However, Nussmeier faced a challenge the following year.

Unfortunately, Nussmeier faced hurdles in 2025 with his abdominal injury. He was limited to nine games last season. Per PFSN’s Jacob Infante, Nussmeier “excels all the fundamentals: he’s accurate, smart, and composed under pressure. His pocket-presence and decision-making stand out.”

In addition, Infante also pointed out, “His 2025 inconsistency sees him fall down the board pretty significantly, but when he’s on like he was for most of 2024, he displays genuine NFL starting potential.”

Given Mike McCarthy’s history of surging quarterback play, Nussmeier’s fit with the Steelers could center more on development than immediate impact under center.

His accuracy and stout fundamentals align with an offense under McCarthy. If he were to sit behind Aaron Rodgers, Nussmeier would have a massive opportunity to refine his already stout decision-making and hold his own at the speed of the NFL.

Given an inconsistent 2025, being behind Rodgers would be a perfect environment for Nussmeier to develop as an NFL quarterback.

Mike Tomlin will not be taking on head coaching duties for the Steelers after 19 seasons. McCarthy, who won a Super Bowl with the Green Bay Packers and Rodgers as the quarterback by defeating the Steelers 31-25, will be Pittsburgh’s new head coach.

Although there is a potential reunion, it is still unclear whether Rodgers will choose to stay with the Steelers. Rodgers’ first season with the Steelers was a good one, and he led Pittsburgh to the playoffs; however, they got stomped by the Houston Texans 30-6.

Per PFSN’s QB Impact metrics, Rodgers threw 24 touchdowns to seven interceptions, achieving a completion rate of 65.7%. He also threw for 3,322 yards and completed 327 passes. Whether or not the 42-year-old quarterback continues to play for the Steelers, the team needs to prepare for the future.

If Rodgers decides to stay with the Steelers, it would be a good opportunity for Nussmeier to be taken under Rodgers’ wing. It is still unclear in what direction Rodgers will take next at this point in his career.
