Miami Hurricanes quarterback Darian Mensah landed in Coral Gables after a protracted saga involving his transfer from the Duke Blue Devils via the transfer portal. Miami head coach Mario Cristobal was desperate to find a replacement for the departing Carson Beck after Beck led the Hurricanes to the national championship game following his transfer from the Georgia Bulldogs.
As one of the premier quarterbacks in the transfer portal, Mensah has an On3 NIL valuation of $2.2 million.
How Head Coach Mario Cristobal Sees Darian Mensah Impacting the Hurricanes
While speaking to reporters after Miami’s first spring practice on Tuesday, Cristobal lavished praise on Mensah’s talent and how his leadership qualities affect the current Hurricanes team.
“A complete professional, ownership of the system, great command, personality, arm talent, escapability, pocket presence, accurate, knowledgeable, great energy about him as well,” Cristobal said. “People gravitate to him and people are attracted to that kind of energy, and I think he’s another galvanizing agent.

“We’ve been very fortunate in that regard over the past several years, about the quarterback being someone who galvanizes people. Him and then the return of guys like Mark Fletcher, Ahmad Moten, even though he’s gonna miss most of spring. I think all those guys went, they think they galvanize this unit. I think Mensah fits in perfectly.”
Cristobal has turned the Hurricanes into the go-to destination for veteran quarterbacks hoping to boost their draft stocks before departing for the NFL. After one season in Coral Gables, Cam Ward was picked No. 1 overall during the 2025 NFL Draft, and Carson Beck is expected to be picked within the first four rounds of this year’s draft.
Darian Mensah Impresses During First Miami Spring Practice Session
In a clip posted on X on Tuesday, “Locked On Canes” analyst Alex Donno broke down how impressive Mensah was during his first spring practice session with Miami.
“My first look at Mensah practicing as a Miami Hurricane,” Donno said. “Some one-on-one drills, seven-on-sevens, and Darian Mensah looks to be expected, right? You can see the arm talent physically, obviously, very mature as a future NFL quarterback. You can see the leg strength and the lower body strength.

“I really have nothing negative to critique about Darian Mensah in drills today. Darion Mensah already is a star. Nice to see Mensah in drills, finding Malachi Toney, of course, is going to be a great connection between those two we expect.”
Mensah led the Blue Devils to an unprecedented ACC championship win last season, their first outright ACC championship since 1962, and was named the championship game’s MVP. He registered 3,973 passing yards, resulting in 34 touchdowns and 6 interceptions for the Blue Devils, earning a PFSN College QB Impact score of 88.2.
