QB Julian Lewis Sends Message on Deion Sanders’ New Colorado Offense

Colorado quarterback Julian Lewis hyped up new offensive coordinator Brennan Marion's new offensive setup for the Buffaloes.

Colorado quarterback Julian Lewis is widely expected to be the Buffaloes’ QB1 next season after redshirting his freshman season in Boulder. Next season, Lewis will play under new Colorado offensive coordinator Brennan Marion, who succeeded Pat Shurmur, who was demoted midway through last season.

Marion has become renowned for his unorthodox “Go-Go Offense” that utilizes two running backs on the same side of the shotgun formation.

Julian Lewis Hypes Colorado’s New Offense

While speaking to reporters after Colorado’s spring practice on Wednesday, Lewis hyped up the Buffs’ new offense, revealing that he tried it out on the CFB 2026 game immediately after Colorado’s new offensive coordinator was hired.

“It looked beautiful to me,” Lewis said. “Until you get on that NCAA playbook and you run it a couple of times. UNLV, oh goodness. It’s gonna be crazy, and it’s exciting that coach Marion brought in that offense. I’m just blessed to run it. Coach Marion is a great guy, great leader. It’s always better coming from somebody with real football experience.

“Knowing coach Marion was a receiver, just hearing his point of view coming from the receiver side, it doesn’t get any better than that, knowing what he’s done with quarterbacks. You can’t really talk back to anything he says. You just got to listen and try to soak as much of it as you can.”

Marion’s career at the top level has taken him to several places, including Hawaii and Pittsburgh as a wide receiver coach before moving to Texas as the passing game coordinator for a season. He spent two seasons as the UNLV Rebels’ offensive coordinator before taking the Sacramento State head coaching job for one season.

Deion Sanders overhauled his roster by adding transfer wide receivers DeAndre Moore Jr., Danny Scudero, and Kam Perry to a room that contains returner Joseph Williams. The Buffs’ running back room was also rejuvenated with the signing of Marion’s former Sac State stars Jaquail Smith and Damian Henderson II and ex-Alabama star Richard Young.

During his interview on Wednesday, Lewis was enthusiastic about the moves made by Coach Prime and Marion to bolster the Buffs’ offense ahead of next season.

“Honestly, it’s been amazing,” Lewis said. “We’ve got a lot of guys with the same mindset. That makes football practice a lot easier, makes bonding a lot easier when there’s a lot of guys that all have the same goals. We just want to win right now.”

Last season, Lewis shared quarterback duties with Kaidon Salter and Ryan Staub, contributing to the Buffs’ anemic offense that averaged 20.9 points per game (No. 116 in the country) and only completed 38.42% of third-down conversion attempts. The Buffs earned a woeful PFSN’s CFB Offense Impact score of 74.4.

In four games played last season, including two starts, Lewis managed 589 yards, resulting in 4 touchdowns.
