Taylor Townsend stood on the runner-up podium at the 2026 ATX Open and chose gratitude over disappointment. The American left-hander fell just short in the singles final of the 2026 ATX Open, losing a tight contest to fellow American Peyton Stearns. In a week that saw her reach her first WTA singles final and capture the doubles title, Townsend made it clear that her journey is still gaining momentum.
Inside Taylor Townsend’s Statement Run at the 2026 ATX Open
Competing as a wildcard at the WTA 250 event in Austin, Texas, Townsend maximized the opportunity. Long celebrated as one of the most skillful players in the sport, particularly in doubles, she has navigated an up-and-down path in singles. In Austin, she advanced to the championship match in singles while also marching through the doubles draw.
In the opening round in singles, Townsend dropped the first set to Czech lucky loser Linda Fruhvirtova before grinding out a 4-6, 7-6(3), 7-5 victory. She followed that with a 6-1, 6-4 win over Czech qualifier Nikola Bartunkova in the round of 16. The quarterfinal presented another stern test when Swiss qualifier Rebeka Masarova claimed the opening set. Townsend responded decisively, turning the match around for a 5-7, 6-2, 6-2 triumph.
In the semifinals, she edged fellow American Ashlyn Krueger 7-6(6), 6-3 to book her maiden WTA singles final. The title match proved tight, with Townsend falling 7-6(8), 7-5 to fourth-seeded Stearns. Even in defeat, her words carried weight.
“I just feel really fortunate,” she said during her runner-up speech. “I’m really blessed to be standing here after 15 years on tour, to be accomplishing this feat, and I’m going to continue to build on it. I’m not done.”

How Did Townsend Balance a Finals Run in Singles With a Title Charge in Doubles?
Her performance extended beyond singles. Teaming with Australia’s Storm Hunter as the top seeds in doubles, Townsend opened with a 6-2, 7-6(5) victory over the American pairing of Peyton Stearns and Venus Williams.
They then swept past Oksana Selekhmeteva and Anastasia Zakharova 6-2, 6-0 in the quarterfinals, defeated fourth seeds Caty McNally and Kimberly Birrell 7-5, 6-4 in the semifinals, and secured the title with a 6-3, 6-4 win over third seeds Eudice Chong and Liang En-shuo.
Townsend is next slated to compete in the BNP Paribas Open at Indian Wells, where she enters the qualifying draw as the No. 20 seed and will face Joanna Garland in her opening match.
