The Dallas Cowboys placed the nonexclusive franchise tag on wide receiver George Pickens this week, formally securing his rights for 2026 while the team works toward a long-term deal with one of the league’s most productive young playmakers.
The move keeps Pickens off the open market and gives the Cowboys time to navigate a complex salary cap picture before negotiations intensify with their emerging superstar.
Cowboys Enter Crucial Stretch With George Pickens Talks Approaching
According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter (via ESPN NFL Nation reporter Todd Archer), “The Cowboys will restructure the contracts of QB Dak Prescott, WR CeeDee Lamb and G Tyler Smith, which will create $66 million of room. Jerry Jones said the Cowboys will rework the contracts of DTs Kenny Clark, Quinnen Williams and Osa Odighizuwa, who are scheduled to count around $63 million against the cap.”

Pickens enters the offseason as one of the NFL’s most impactful receivers after posting a PFSN WR Impact score of 88.4, ranking third overall behind only the Los Angeles Rams’ Puka Nacua and Seattle Seahawks’ Jaxon Smith-Njigba. His production, age, and fit within the Cowboys offense have made securing a long-term agreement a top priority for the front office.
The nonexclusive franchise tag allows Pickens to negotiate with other teams, while giving the Cowboys the right of first refusal to match any offer.
If the Cowboys decline to match an offer sheet, the team would receive two first-round draft picks as compensation. The designation also signals the Cowboys’ intent to keep their core intact as they attempt to remain competitive in a tightening NFC landscape.
Pickens’ arrival last spring reshaped the Cowboys’ passing game and helped fuel an offense that finished with a PFSN Offense Impact score of 84.8, ranking sixth in the league. His ability to win downfield, create separation, and draw coverage attention elevated the unit and provided a dynamic complement to CeeDee Lamb.
Together, they formed one of the league’s most explosive receiving tandems, giving Prescott a reliable and versatile pair of targets. The expected restructures on both sides of the ball would give the Cowboys flexibility to operate in free agency while maintaining continuity with key contributors.
Clark, Williams, and Odighizuwa anchor a defensive front that played a major role in the team’s success last season, and adjusting their contracts would help stabilize the roster.
The Cowboys have until mid-July to finalize a multi-year deal with Pickens. If no agreement is reached, he would play the 2026 season on the one-year franchise tender while negotiations continue.
