The Minnesota Vikings could be gearing up for one of the boldest quarterback swings of the 2026 offseason. With uncertainty surrounding J.J. McCarthy — injuries and low confidence — no wonder the Vikes are flipping through QB portfolios. Maybe they have found one!
This Signal-Caller Might Be the Fix After J.J. McCarthy
With the Arizona Cardinals potentially resetting its roster, a new prediction has linked Minnesota to Kyler Murray, the former No. 1 overall pick who signed a five-year, $230.5 million deal. If the Cardinals move on, the Vikings could emerge as a surprise landing spot.
Murray’s situation in Arizona is complicated. Injuries have disrupted multiple seasons, coaching staffs have changed, and the franchise hasn’t returned to the playoffs since 2021. Still just 28 years old, Murray remains one of the NFL’s most electric dual-threat quarterbacks, boasting a career 67% completion rate, over 20,000 passing yards, 121 touchdowns, 60 interceptions, and 7.0 yards per rush.
PFSN’s Ryan Guthrie laid out why Minnesota makes sense as a destination. “Minnesota has quietly become a destination for quarterbacks looking to revive their careers,” Guthrie wrote. “Just look at the recent turnarounds of Daniel Jones and Super Bowl winner Sam Darnold.”
The implication: head coach Kevin O’Connell has built an environment where reclamation projects can stabilize and thrive.
Guthrie pointed directly to the system fit. “A big reason for that success is head coach Kevin O’Connell and his quarterback-friendly offensive system. O’Connell’s scheme consistently manufactures open throws, simplifies reads, and emphasizes timing, all elements that could maximize Murray’s speed-to-arm talent combination.”
In theory, that structure could help Murray recapture the efficiency he flashed early in his career.
The Vikings’ 2025 numbers reinforce the argument. “The Vikings finished 9-8 last season, largely because the defense under Brian Flores carried the load,” Guthrie noted.
Offensively, inconsistency under center proved costly.
“The Vikings offense had a PFSN NFL Offensive Impact grade of 66, which was 28th in the NFL a year ago. Not up to O’Connell’s standards by any means.”
McCarthy battled injuries and uneven play, leaving the unit short of its ceiling.
Guthrie believes adding Murray would immediately change that calculus. “Insert Murray’s playmaking ability into that system, and Minnesota instantly raises its offensive ceiling,” he wrote.
“His mobility would add another layer to O’Connell’s design-heavy passing attack, and with the right structure around him, the Vikings could quickly re-enter the NFC playoff picture in 2026.”
But theory and reality aren’t always aligned. Murray is listed at 5-foot-10, and O’Connell’s offense leans heavily on intermediate throws over the middle, areas where sightlines and pocket discipline are critical. There are fair questions about whether Murray would consistently operate from under center in play-action concepts or default to improvisation outside structure.
And then, the question of injuries draws a parallel to McCarthy’s journey so far. Murray played only 5 games last season, finishing 21st in PFSN’s NFL QB Impact Metrics. Meanwhile, McCarthy played 10 games, finishing 37th.
The contract is another hurdle. Trading for Murray would mean absorbing a significant financial commitment tied to that $230.5 million extension. Minnesota would need to decide whether the upside justifies the risk, especially with McCarthy still on a rookie deal.
If Murray were released rather than traded, the conversation would be more realistic, but that scenario would require Arizona to absorb massive dead money.
Ultimately, the Vikings sit in the middle ground of quarterback possibilities. Elite names like Joe Burrow or Lamar Jackson are unrealistic. Lower-tier veterans don’t meaningfully move the needle. Murray falls squarely in the intriguing-but-risky tier.
He’s immensely talented, still young, but carrying injury history and financial baggage. Whether Minnesota views that as a gamble worth taking may define its 2026 trajectory.
