Coco Gauff found a way to laugh through an uncomfortable moment, using humor and pop culture to lighten the mood during a demanding stretch of her season. Coco Gauff Laughs Through an Uncomfortable Moment With a Spider-Man Joke

The moment came after Gauff wrapped up her seventh appearance at the Australian Open. Seeded third, Gauff arrived in Melbourne with title expectations and moved efficiently through the early rounds, posting wins over Kamilla Rakhimova, Olga Danilović, Hailey Baptiste, and 19th seed Karolína Muchová.

Her run marked a third consecutive quarterfinal showing at the season’s first Major. That momentum stalled against 12th seed Elina Svitolina, who handed Gauff a 6-1, 6-2 defeat in just 59 minutes under the closed roof at Rod Laver Arena, ending her campaign earlier than hoped.

With Melbourne behind her, Gauff quickly shifted focus to training and recovery ahead of the Middle Eastern events. In an Instagram story, Gauff posted a photo of her noticeably swollen wrist, explaining that the swelling was caused by a spider bite.

Rather than dwelling on the discomfort, she added a playful caption that leaned into superhero lore, joking that she hoped the spider was “the radioactive kind.” The line was a clear nod to Spider-Man, whose origin story famously begins with a radioactive spider bite that grants him extraordinary powers.

“Can’t really tell but my arm is swollen because I got bit by a spider, let’s all hope it was the radioactive kind,” Gauff wrote.

How Has Gauff Fared Heading Into the Upcoming Qatar Open in Doha?

Gauff is getting set for her fifth appearance at the Qatar Open in Doha. The WTA 1000 event is scheduled to take place from Feb. 8 to 10 on the outdoor hard courts at the Khalifa International Tennis and Squash Complex.

Gauff’s history at the Qatar Open is a tale of two disciplines. While she has struggled to maintain consistent momentum in the singles draw, she transformed the tournament into her personal playground in doubles, capturing back-to-back titles in 2022 and 2023.

In the singles arena, Gauff’s debut in 2022 remains one of her strongest showings. She reached the quarterfinals, where she fell to Maria Sakkari, 3-6, 3-6. Gauff returned in 2023 and mirrored her previous success by reaching the quarterfinals once again. However, her run ended against Veronika Kudermetova, who edged her out in a three-set battle.

The 2024 and 2025 campaigns were uncharacteristically short for the American star. In 2024, despite entering with high expectations, she was upset in her opening match by Kateřina Siniaková, 2-6, 4-6. She repeated her performance in 2025, where she recorded a second-round loss to Marta Kostyuk, falling 2-6, 5-7.

While her singles results have fluctuated, Gauff’s doubles legacy in Doha is undeniable. Alongside compatriot Jessica Pegula, she won the title in 2022 by defeating the team of Kudermetova and Elise Mertens in a thrilling match tie-break. The duo successfully defended their crown in 2023, overcoming Lyudmyla Kichenok and Jeļena Ostapenko.
