Shelton was seeded eighth at the 2026 Australian Open, and he began his campaign with a victory against Ugo Humbert, winning 6-3, 7-6(2), 7-6(5), and then defeated qualifier Dane Sweeny 6-3, 6-2, 6-2 in the second round.
Shelton then eliminated 30th seed Valentin Vacherot 6-4, 6-4, 7-6(5), and 12th seed Casper Ruud 3-6, 6-4, 6-3, 6-4 in the third and fourth rounds, respectively, before losing to Sinner with a scoreline of 3-6, 4-6, 4-6 in the quarterfinals.
Following his loss to Sinner, during the post-match press conference, Shelton shared that he is close to bringing his game together and assured that this loss at the Melbourne Major would not deter him.
The former World No. 5 expressed his desire to play more matches so he can better understand his hand and avoid falling behind. While acknowledging that he is not yet a complete player, he feels he is getting closer to that goal as time goes on.
“I do think that I’m close to bringing it all together. It’s just going to take that one time where I do get over the hump. Certainly not discouraged from a performance like this. I know how I feel when I get out in front at the Slams. I feel like I’m untouchable, and I guarantee the other guys at the top feel the exact same,” Shelton said.
Shelton described himself as “blessed” and “lucky,” attributing his progress to the supportive people around him, which he stated makes improving easier. He described himself as an “addict,” addicted to tennis and driven to improve his strength each year.
“I know how blessed and lucky I am. But I’m an addict. I become more and more addicted to this game, and I’m figuring things out, chasing the guys who are ahead of me. The drive is getting stronger each year. Tonight I’m upset 100% with how it went, but I have a lot of belief in myself,” he added.
Looking ahead, Shelton is expected to next compete at the 2026 Dallas Open, which will take place from February 9 to February 15, 2026, at the Ford Center at The Star in Frisco, Texas, United States.
