Entering the 2025 season, the Miami Dolphins had a roster capable of fighting for a playoff spot, but they did not. The Dolphins finished the season with a 7-11 record and, at times, looked like the worst team in the NFL.
The Miami Dolphins Are Projected To Move On From Their Star WR
HC Mike McDaniel, who is now the Los Angeles Chargers OC, was fired after the season, and there’s a good chance QB Tua Tagovailoa is not the starter next season. Even though the Dolphins have hired their next HC, some significant decisions remain, but the good news is that one will be easier than the others.
Even before the season started, there were rumors that Tyreek Hill was unhappy in the Dolphins, and those rumors were reinforced at the beginning of the season when the Dolphins were losing badly. Still, Hill was going to play, but after suffering a horrifying and catastrophic leg injury against the New York Jets in Week 4, his season was over.
Now that the offseason has begun, Hill’s future with the team is in doubt. According to Dolphins Insider Barry Jackson, the Dolphins will likely cut Hill this offseason:
“Hill, coming off a major Week 4 knee injury, is due to make $29.9 million next season, but none of that money is assured until mid-March, when $11 million of the $29 million becomes guaranteed if he’s on the team, as well as a $5 million roster bonus.”
“So the Dolphins almost assuredly will release Hill before mid-March. Because that contract carries a $51.9 million cap hit, there was virtually no chance that Hill would have returned on that deal – even before the injury. If the Dolphins as expected cut Hill before the $11 million becomes guaranteed in March, his 2026 cap hit would drop from $51.9 million to $28.2 million. The 2026 Dolphins cap hit would be just $15.9 million if he’s cut after June 1.”
As Jackson explains, with the injury, which could impact Hill’s speed and risk of re-injury, and the money involved, the Dolphins will likely move on from him this offseason. A cap hit of $51.9 million is a heavy price, but with a team that is very much entering a potential rebuild, the Dolphins can not have this on its books.
While they faced some challenges this season, their offense scored 73.1 on the PFSN Offense Impact score, placing them 19th in the league. There’s potential for improvement ahead.
Now that Jeff Hafley has become the Dolphins HC, work has to be done across the roster and coaching staff to turn this franchise around, but one thing is for certain: Hill will not be in the Dolphins to watch it happen.
