Whenever the NFL playoffs come around, some of the best rivalries in sports are born, but even better is when two divisional rivals play each other. On Saturday night, the San Francisco 49ers will travel to face the Seattle Seahawks in a heated battle.
Tensions are already high when these two meet, but with both teams fighting for the playoffs, it will reach another level.
Former 49ers DB Donte Whitner Makes Bold Statement Ahead of Saturday’s Playoff Game
The 49ers and Seahawks are some of the top teams in the NFL, and if this game ends like the others, it’s going to be a close battle. Former 49ers Donte Whitner disagrees with that and actually thinks it could be quite the opposite if the 49ers have their WR1.

“Ricky Pearsall! When you go back and watch week 1, he put Riq Woolen in a blender. Their defensive backs are afraid of Ricky Pearsall and you want to know why? Because they see a poor man’s JSN. Same body mannerisms. Same smoothness. The ability to push the ball vertically. The double move. Catches the ball over the middle. Run after the catch. Red zone threat. If Ricky Pearsall plays this week, it’s not even close. The 49ers will go into Seattle and blow out the Seattle Seahawks,” he said.
There is a good amount of information unpacked here. Looking back at the performance Whitner referenced from Ricky Pearsall, the young WR had 4 receptions for 108 yards and ranked 10th overall in PFSN’s WR Impact Metric that week.
Pearsall was injured during the second meeting between the two teams, but throughout the 9 games he played this season, the second-year WR was dangerous against defenses. The only thing with what Whitner said is that the Seahawks have also improved throughout the season.
Coming into this game, the Seahawks are ranked 3rd overall in PFSN’s Defensive Impact Metric. That is elite, and although one of their worst performances was in Week 1, the team is much different now.
The other issue, and some Whitner noted later in the video, is that Pearsall is still injured. I mentioned earlier that he played only 9 games this season, but his last game was Week 17.
He missed the final game of the season against the Seahawks and the first playoff game, in which the 49ers beat the Philadelphia Eagles.
Now, entering the next playoff game, Pearsall has been limited in practice due to his knee injury. Time will tell if the WR will play, but if Weeks 1 and 18 say anything, the 49ers are going to need him if they want to beat their division rival.
