Bill Belichick’s Excuses Running Out As UNC HC Handed Transfer Portal Ultimatum

After a year of on-field struggles, UNC hopes that delving into the transfer portal to address areas of profound need at multiple positions.

The University of North Carolina took an aggressive approach in the transfer portal. UNC aims to quickly improve its football program. After a disappointing 4-8 season in his collegiate debut, head coach Bill Belichick now faces mounting pressure to deliver results. The rush stems from high expectations that demand immediate progress.

UNC HC Bill Belichick Should Feel Pressed to Succeed, Asserts CFB Analyst

When Belichick arrived in Chapel Hill, some believed that merely his presence would bring seismic change to the Tar Heels. After floundering in the middle of the ACC, thoughts of championships and big games entered the heads of followers. However, reality struck, and the Tar Heels found themselves on the business end of a brutal season on both sides of the ball.

For instance, UNC ranked No. 83 in PFSN’s CFB Offense Impact metric. Meanwhile, the defense held down the No. 58 spot in PFSN’s CFB Defense Impact metric. As a result, the team jumped into the transfer portal, seeking talent. Greg Barnes joined the “Inside Carolina” podcast to discuss the matter.

“Had a full year. I mean, you’ve been UNC’s head coach for 13 months now. And what that sets up is there are no more excuses. There’s no more learning on the job because they have that full year of experience under their belt.”

“And that’s the good thing. I think that’s good for everybody, especially the fan base. There should be an agreement that okay, whatever happened. Let’s see what takes place here moving forward because, to your point, they’ve got to hit some benchmarks in the portal.

These heightened expectations also come with significant investment. According to the Sporting News, only 11 coaches make more than Belichick. At $10.1 million, North Carolina invested in potential. Nonetheless, last season, the team failed to live up to the expectations. In response, Belichick fired offensive coordinator Freddie Kitchens, replacing him with Bobby Petrino.

This year’s schedule presents challenges for immediate improvement. As last year, TCU is the season opener, now at Aviva Stadium in Ireland on August 29. After facing East Tennessee State, North Carolina encounters seven straight opponents who played in bowl games last season, including Notre Dame, Duke, Louisville, and Clemson.

The standout from UNC’s portal additions is Billy Edwards Jr., formerly of Maryland and Wisconsin. With a 62.1% career completion rate, he brings unpredictability without a set scheme fit. UNC must adapt around Edwards to regain national relevance.
