Manchester United head coach Ruben Amorim has often been in the media’s crosshairs due to his side’s inconsistent performances over the past year. And now, the Portuguese has cast doubt on his Red Devils future in a fiery post-match press conference.
Ruben Amorim Makes Assertive Claim About Manchester United Future
On Sunday, Jan. 4, Manchester United recorded a 1-1 Premier League draw at Leeds United, following a 1-1 league home draw against Wolverhampton Wanderers. Matheus Cunha scored a 65th-minute equalizer for the visitors after Brenden Aaronson’s 61:36 opener.
During a post-game press conference, Amorim was asked why he had seemed so downbeat in his Friday press conference. The 40-year-old replied by revealing that he was promised more power in his current head coach role when he was hired back in November 2024.
“I came here to be the manager of Manchester United, not to be the coach of Manchester United. And that is clear. I know that my name is not (Thomas) Tuchel, it’s not (Antonio) Conte, it’s not (Jose) Mourinho, but I’m the manager of Manchester United. And it’s going to be like this for 18 months, or when the board decides to change,” Amorim said.
He concluded, “So that was my point, I want to finish with that. I’m not going to quit. I will do my job until the other guy is coming here to replace me. I just want to say that I came here to be the manager of Manchester United, not to be the coach. And every department, the scouting department, the sporting director, needs to do their job. I will do mine for 18 months, and then we move on.”

In the last 14 months, Amorim has overseen just 25 wins, 15 draws, and 23 losses in 63 total outings in charge of Manchester United. He will next lead his team from the dugout in Wednesday’s Premier League match against Burnley, who are 19th in the league table, at Turf Moor.
Manchester United Identify Ivory Coast Winger As Winter Signing
According to Sky Sports, Manchester United have added RB Leipzig attacker Yan Diomande to their wish list after being snubbed by Manchester City transfer target Antoine Semenyo.
However, the Red Devils are likely to be unopposed in their pursuit of the Ivory Coast star. Bayern Munich and Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) are also keeping tabs on the 19-year-old. Diomande, valued at between $70 and $82 million, has scored seven goals and provided four assists in 16 appearances across all competitions for Leipzig so far this campaign.
