Former Cowboys HC Predicted as One of the Candidates to Become Dallas’ Rival’s Next Coach

After the 2024 season, the Dallas Cowboys decided to part ways with veteran head coach Mike McCarthy. McCarthy did not coach anywhere in 2025 but is expected to land a job during this next cycle.

Now, an NFL insider is reporting that McCarthy could be one of the top candidates to land the head coaching job for one of the Cowboys’ biggest rivals.

Which Team Has Mike McCarthy Been Floated as a Candidate?

Over five years at the helm in Dallas, McCarthy compiled a 49-35 overall record, with a 1-3 mark in the postseason. McCarthy is best known for his 13-year tenure as the head coach of the Green Bay Packers, where he won Super Bowl 45.

The Giants are in need of a new head coach after firing Brian Daboll earlier this season. As a result, Giants insider Jordan Raanan recently compiled a list of logical candidates for the Giants.

McCarthy was among the names listed, as Raanan believes the team may want an experienced option.

“McCarthy has the most extensive track record as a head coach of all the candidates, although it’s possible someone more impressive could shake free in the next few weeks,” Raanan explained. “McCarthy has been a consistent winner and had success with multiple quarterbacks. All positives for his candidacy.”

As Raanan mentioned, McCarthy has had plenty of success with quarterbacks, most notably Aaron Rodgers and Dak Prescott. The allure of a coach with a Super Bowl win on his resume may be hard for the Giants to pass up.

McCarthy has an overall record of 174-112-2 in 18 years as an NFL head coach.

In addition to McCarthy, Raanan listed fellow former head coaches Antonio Pierce and Vance Joseph, as well as current interim head coach Mike Kafka, as coaches who will likely receive interviews for the position.

Giants Looking to Finally Improve in 2026

Entering Week 18, the Giants are sitting at 3-13. The team is in dead last in the NFC East and currently owns the No. 2 pick in the 2026 NFL Draft.

There were some signs of life this season, but things eventually unraveled. Rookie running back Cam Skattebo looked to be on the verge of becoming a key contributor before suffering a serious, season-ending injury. Rookie quarterback Jaxson Dart has also dealt with injuries and inconsistency.

PFSN’s Offense Impact ranking gives the Giants a 69.9 grade, which is 25th in the league. PFSN’s Defense Impact ranking, meanwhile, gives the Giants a 68.7 grade, which is 23rd in the league.

Whoever the coach is in 2026 will have their hands full trying to get this franchise turned around.
