The Toronto Maple Leafs finally gave their fans a reason to breathe just before Christmas. A much-needed win snapped a short skid, but it did little to quiet the bigger questions surrounding the season.
As Toronto moves deeper into the schedule, attention has shifted from the ice to the bench. One rumor in particular has sparked a strong and unified reaction from the fan base.
Maple Leafs Fans Push Back on Coaching Rumor Tied to Craig Berube
Toronto beat the Pittsburgh Penguins 6-3 on Tuesday at Scotiabank Arena, ending a frustrating stretch. The timing mattered, yet the win did not erase concerns that have followed the team for weeks.
Max Domi delivered the turning point late in the third period, breaking a 3-3 tie and swinging momentum. William Nylander looked re-energized, scoring twice and adding two assists, including the final empty-net goal. Steven Lorentz, Bobby Mcmann, and Matias Maccelli also scored as Toronto built leads, gave them back, and responded again.
That pattern has defined much of the Leafs’ season. Wins have come, but they are often paired with uneven starts or late-game lapses. Defensive breakdowns, missed opportunities, and prolonged periods without secondary scoring continue to shape the conversation surrounding this roster.
Despite the win, outside noise followed immediately. A post from former Canadian television broadcaster Sid Seixeiro on X stirred debate by suggesting Craig Berube could be fired if management believes the season can still be saved. He added that such a move would send a shock through the room and pointed to John Tortorella as the only coach capable of pulling it off.
The idea landed poorly with many fans. One reaction cut straight to the point, saying, “I mean, if your goal is to tank the season for your top-five protected pick, then sure, not a bad idea.” That response reflected frustration not just with the rumor, but with the direction it implied.
Others questioned whether a change behind the bench would even make a difference. A different fan argued, “No coach can fix that. Too much cap space has been spent on skilled players who can’t stand up to the grit of the game. It’s the roster.” The comment shifted blame away from Berube and toward construction issues that have lingered for years.
Some fans prioritized practicality over emotion. One response dismissed the idea entirely, writing, “Not happening. If they fire Berube, it will be DeBoer.” That suggests fans see the rumor as unrealistic rather than urgent.
Another voice conveyed a deeper fatigue with coaching turnover. “What a waste!!! IMO, they need to look at what they have on the bench each night. Too easy to fire the coach. Still the same players. The players are the issue,” the fan wrote, pointing to accountability within the lineup.

Tortorella’s résumé explains why his name still carries weight. He has coached multiple NHL teams, won a Stanley Cup, passed 500 wins, and earned two Jack Adams Awards. He is also known for his hard edge, blunt comments, and demanding style, traits that often divide locker rooms as much as they motivate them.
