DK Metcalf Has Viral Altercation With Lions Fan: What Happened, and Will the Steelers Star Be Suspended by NFL?

Steelers star DK Metcalf had a controversial moment with a fan on the sidelines during Pittsburgh's game agains the Lions in Week 16.

The Pittsburgh Steelers and Detroit Lions have huge stakes riding on today’s Week 16 game. Both teams need a win badly as they look to keep their playoff hopes alive or improve them.

The Steelers’ offense has looked poor to start the game, and DK Metcalf’s frustration led him to get into an altercation as the Steelers star hit a fan who was antagonizing him.

DK Metcalf Gets Heated at a Fan

Metcalf was triggered by a fan in the stands in Lions gear. After exchanging words, he swung his arm and struck the fan. Metcalf wasn’t punished for his action because it happened on the sideline, and the refs seemingly didn’t see it.

However, Metcalf will almost certainly be punished with a hefty fine or a suspension by the NFL, as players aren’t allowed to hit fans. The fan’s instigation will be considered during the punishment process, but it doesn’t excuse the action. A suspension could prove costly when the Steelers need to win.

Metcalf is the top target in Pittsburgh, and it’s pretty bleak beyond him. No one has more than 400 receiving yards except for him, and it’s already game 15. The Steelers cannot afford to miss Metcalf at any point for the rest of the season, but a suspension is more than possible.

The NFL is going to look into the altercation for potential discipline. The refs aren’t allowed to make any decisions on the incident if they didn’t see it. However, that doesn’t mean Metcalf will go unpunished.

The NFL is allowed to fine or suspend Metcalf based on the incident. The league will review the conflict, and Metcalf will be handed a punishment, as severe as the NFL chooses, based on their review of the video. There is a maximum fine, and alongside a fine, the star wideout can be suspended for Pittsburgh’s upcoming key matchups.

Altercations with fans can be overlooked, though. Lamar Jackson wasn’t suspended for shoving a fan during their Week 1 game, but was pushed by the fan first, and the two-time NFL MVP ended up getting off unpunished.

Metcalf’s case is different as the fan did not touch him before the Steelers star swung at the fan. This doesn’t bode well for Metcalf, and a suspension could be on its way. The jury is still out for Metcalf as he awaits his fate.
