After trading for former Seattle Seahawks wide receiver DK Metcalf in the 2025 offseason, expectations were all over the place for the Pittsburgh Steelers as they scrambled to find a quarterback.
They then signed Aaron Rodgers to take over under center, which led analysts and fans to speculate how the two would mesh together. While he’s had some big games, Metcalf has had an up-and-down season, including a slow start against the Detroit Lions in Week 16.
What Happened to Pittsburgh Steelers WR DK Metcalf?
No, Metcalf is not injured. In fact, he’s been a consistent presence for the Steelers’ offense this season, playing in all 14 games heading into Week 16. However, after catching all three of his targets against the Miami Dolphins for 55 yards and a touchdown in Week 15, he’s struggled to get going against the Lions in Week 16.
Through two quarters, Metcalf has been targeted by Rodgers four times, yet the veteran wideout has only been able to haul in one for five yards. Things got even more perplexing as he was filmed getting into an altercation with a fan on the sidelines, which wound up with him throwing a punch at the Lions fan.

So far this season, Metcalf has caught 55 of 90 targets for 808 yards and six touchdowns. He’s also gotten two carries for 12 yards and another trip to the end zone. He was able to find his way to the end zone against the Dolphins, but had a massive outing against the Baltimore Ravens in Week 14. Rodgers targeted him 12 times, with Metcalf catching seven for 148 yards.
He does rank in the top-20 of PFSN’s NFL WR Impact metric at 18th with an impact score of 82.0. However, while Metcalf has done well this season, the Steelers offense has been a middle-of-the-road unit, ranking 15th in PFSN’s Offense Impact metric with an impact score of 76.3. He’s the only Steelers wideout worth scoring with Calvin Austin III coming in as the 81st-ranked wide receiver.
Thankfully, the defense has kept them in the game, as the offense was able to go down the field to score a touchdown, tying the game at 10 apiece. The Lions and Steelers head to the locker room at halftime.
However, Rodgers is going to need more from his WR1 if the Steelers are going to stay atop the AFC North. The Lions have plenty to play for, so getting more out of Metcalf will be crucial for Pittsburgh’s offense in the second half.
