49ers’ Playoff Scenarios Week 15: Can San Francisco Still Make the Postseason or Win NFC West?

The 49ers are in third place in the NFC West. We examine their chances of making the postseason and capturing the division title.

The 49ers entered Week 15 against the Tennessee Titans coming off a bye and riding a three-game winning streak. San Francisco has a strong chance of making the playoffs and is competing with the Los Angeles Rams and Seattle Seahawks in the NFC West. The 49ers still have a realistic path to winning the NFC West, depending on how the remaining games play out.

After being ahead by only seven points at halftime, the 49ers pulled away from the Titans to secure a much-needed 37-24 win. Brock Purdy and Jauan Jennings connected on two touchdown passes, and Christian McCaffrey added a rushing touchdown.

What Are the San Francisco 49ers’ Chances of Making the Playoffs and Winning the NFC West?

According to PFSN’s NFL Playoff Predictor, the 49ers’ chances of making the playoffs stood at 88.6% before Week 15 and increased to 98.0% after a win over the Titans. If the 49ers had lost to Tennessee, their playoff chances would have dropped to 75.5%

However, a win for both the Rams and the Seahawks hurt San Francisco’s chances of winning the NFC West. Their odds of winning the division dropped from 11.7% to 10.5% despite their win against the Titans.

The 49ers’ win keeps them in contention for the division title, but they need help. The easiest path to the NFC West is for San Francisco to win its remaining games and for the Rams to lose to the Seahawks. Otherwise, the 49ers can secure a playoff berth as a wildcard if they continue winning, regardless of the division outcome.

According to PFSN’s NFL Strength of Schedule, the 49ers have the hardest remaining schedule. The two teams they’re chasing in the NFC West also face tough finishes.
The Rams and Seahawks have the 13th- and ninth-hardest remaining schedules, respectively.

After beating the two-win Titans, the 49ers face teams competing for playoff spots and positioning.

  • Week 16: at Indianapolis Colts (51.5% chance to win)
  • Week 17: vs. Chicago Bears (50.5% chance to win)
  • Week 18: vs. Seattle Seahawks (40.8% chance to win)

The Seahawks face three playoff-contending teams, while the Rams play only the Seahawks before ending with two teams out of contention.

Seahawks’ remaining schedule

  • Week 16: vs. Los Angeles Rams (50.5% chance to win)
  • Week 17: at Carolina Panthers (69.8% chance to win)
  • Week 18: at San Francisco 49ers (59.2% chance to win)

Rams’ remaining schedule

  • Week 16: at Seattle Seahawks (49.5% chance to win)
  • Week 17: at Atlanta Falcons (66.9% chance to win)
  • Week 18: vs. Arizona Cardinals (74.7% chance to win)

The 49ers had the 29th-best PFSN’s Offense Impact (OFFi) for Week 13 in their last game against the Cleveland Browns. San Francisco had registered four straight top-seven weekly finishes. With three winning teams left on the schedule, the 49ers need the offense that has the eighth-best OFFi ranking of the season to show up.

If Seattle beats LA on Thursday and the SF beats Seattle in week 18, and otherwise all 3 teams win out, there would be a 3 way tie that the 49ers would win for the division.
