How Long Will Colts’ QB Daniel Jones be Out?

Earlier this month, it was announced that Jones suffered a fractured fibula, but decided he would play through the pain. However, it appears that today will be his last game of the season due to an apparent Achilles injury.

According to NFL reporter Ian Rapoport, “If the MRI confirms a torn Achilles, Daniel Jones will face a 9-month recovery that puts him right up against the start of the 2026 season. Jones is a pending free agent, though Indy wants him back.”

Before this game, Jones had completed 67.9% of passes for 3041 yards and 19 touchdowns. As a runner, he’s rushed 44 times for 160 yards and five touchdowns. In PFSN’s QBi, he ranks fifth this season with a letter grade of B and an impact score of 86.6. As an offensive unit, the Colts rank as the best offense in PFSN’s OFFi, earning an A- letter grade and an impact score of 90.7.

The former sixth overall pick by the New York Giants had finally found his footing as a starter, finally playing to what people thought he’d be. Jones is in line to get a lucrative contract this offseason, and many believe he’ll return to the Colts.

Instead of turning to Anthony Richardson, the former fourth overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft, the team has given the reins to rookie quarterback Riley Leonard out of Notre Dame.

The team is in a challenging position following Jones’ injury, and despite playing Leonard, should the Colts give Richardson another chance? Both quarterbacks are a downgrade from Jones, which should only increase the workload of running back Jonathan Taylor. Hopefully, the Jones injury doesn’t put the team’s surprising season to waste, but it’s hard to feel as confident about their chances with the alternative quarterbacks.
