Lane Kiffin hasn’t been in a hot seat in the 2025 season, and Ole Miss’s 10-1 record backs that up. However, his name keeps coming up in a three-team coaching tug-of-war involving LSU, Ole Miss, and Florida.
The idea of Kiffin leaving Ole Miss during such a strong season is unexpected, but the coaching carousel has a way of producing surprises at any moment.
Sports Analyst Backs Lane Kiffin’s Agent Jimmy Sexton Amid Coaching Turmoil
Kiffin’s agent, Jimmy Sexton, is known for his skill in leveraging coaching openings to secure major raises and contract extensions for his clients. So many are pointing fingers at Sexton for the current drama surrounding Kiffin.
However, it’s worth noting that he also represents top coaches like Kirby Smart, Kalen DeBoer, and Steve Sarkisian. None of these elite coaches are involved in any coaching carousel rumors.
In Yahoo Sports’ “College Football Enquirer” podcast, Andy Staples, Ross Dellenger, and Steven Godfrey discussed Kiffin’s coaching saga, where they pushed back on the idea that Sexton is responsible for the chaos.
“It’s funny because Jimmy Sexton is his agent, and I think people are blaming Jimmy Sexton for this theater,” Staples said (32:20). “I do not think that Jimmy Sexton is the cause of this because Jimmy Sexton has had plenty of clients who were like, ‘Okay, I’ll stay. Let’s sign that extension.’
“This is a Lane production. So, Jimmy Sexton is happy to oblige when his client is pushing, you know, pushing the leverage as high as possible. But I don’t think this is Jimmy saying, ‘Hey, Lane, this would be awesome if you did it this way.'”
Kiffin met with Ole Miss officials last Friday, and the sides agreed he will coach the Egg Bowl against Mississippi State on Friday. He is then expected to announce his long-term plans the following day.
Meanwhile, On3’s Pete Nakos reported Monday that both Florida and LSU have felt confident in recent weeks that they were leading the race to hire Kiffin.
However, Barstool Sports’ Brandon Walker claimed the entire situation is “a ploy” to make Kiffin’s return to Ole Miss more dramatic. ESPN’s Peter Burns also reported that the Rebels still have the strongest chance to keep their head coach.
“Ole Miss still has the upper hand right now, this is the team & staff he’s built + the opportunity to coach this team for a playoff run is a HUGE draw to stay,” Burns reported.
“When listening to presser, Lane kindly said he wouldn’t answer any questions regarding his future; however, I thought telling he did say he wants to coach the team to end of the season. My guess would be he’d like to do that & then decide, but that timing likely not an option.”
Ole Miss is sixth in the College Football Playoff rankings and can secure its first-ever CFP berth with a win on Saturday. The Rebels are also ranked No. 9 in the PFSN CFB Playoff Meter.
