Jannik Sinner, Carlos Alcaraz, and others from the tennis community reacted as Italy successfully defended their Davis Cup title once again by defeating Spain 2-0 in the final in Bologna. They became the first country to win the tournament thrice in a row since the United States won five on the trot from 1968-1972.
Italy and Spain were both competing without their star players Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz but did remarkably well to reach the final. Here, the Italians triumphed 2-0 thanks to wins from Matteo Berrettini and Flavio Cobolli to win their fourth Davis Cup title.
Jannik Sinner, Carlos Alcaraz, and Others Congratulate Italy on Davis Cup Triumph
Alcaraz was one of the first to congratulate Italy on their triumph. The World No. 1, whose absence was felt by his country, Spain, in the final, took to his Instagram Stories and lauded the Italians as well as his compatriots.
“Congratulations (Italy) on another Davis Cup! So proud of our guys. You guys are amazing,” Alcaraz’s caption read (as translated from Spanish).

Jannik Sinner, whose withdrawal from the tournament garnered a lot of attention, heaped praise on his compatriots on their monumental achievement, stating (translated from Italian):
“Congratulations on this incredible victory.”

22-time Grand Slam champion Rafael Nadal, who was instrumental in Spain’s most recent Davis Cup victory in 2019, also lauded Italy, writing:
“Congrats for your third Davis Cup in a row.”
The 39-year-old also lavished praise on the Spanish team on their performance, writing on his Instagram stories:
“Amazing week at the @daviscup. Congratulations @davidferrer1982 @munarclar @pablo_carreno_ @marcelgranollers @martinezportero”

There were a few Italian players who congratulated their compatriots on the triumph, including Lorenzo Musetti, Lucia Bronzetti, and Elisabetta Cocciaretto, who watched the action live in Bologna.

Italy Did Not Lose a Single Match En Route to Davis Cup Triumph
Despite Sinner’s absence, Italy produced a solid display at the Davis Cup and did not lose a single match during the Final 8, as Berrettini and Cobolli starred. The hosts won each of their ties by a 2-0 scoreline, beating Austria and Belgium in the quarterfinals and semifinals, respectively.
In the final, Berrettini faced Pablo Carreño Busta and won 6-3, 6-4, which was the same scoreline by which he beat Raphaël Collignon in the semifinal tie. Next up, was what turned out to be a thrilling encounter between Cobolli and Jaume Munar. The Spaniard won the opening set 6-1 but the Italian held his nerve to take the second set via a tiebreak before winning the third 7-5 to seal victory for his nation.
