The Wyoming Cowboys’ hopes of finishing the season 6-6 and in bowl contention died after their 7-13 loss to the Nevada Wolfpack. However, an appearance from NFL superstar and MVP Josh Allen was the highlight of the weekend as he had his jersey number retired.
During his speech, Allen made a nod to the Border War, a rivalry between the Colorado State University Rams and the Wyoming Cowboys. Allen spent two seasons at Wyoming after coming out of high school as an unranked prospect.

During halftime in today’s game between Wyoming and Nevada, the Buffalo Bills’ superstar had his jersey number retired by the Cowboys. While giving a speech, the NFL MVP could not help but take a dig at one of his old rivals in Colorado State.

“Thank you for this achievement. Love you guys, I’m so honored and blessed to represent this university and this beautiful state,” Allen said. “And it will always suck to be a CSU Ram.”
Allen spent three years at Wyoming, finishing with a 16-11 record. The Cowboys also qualified for bowl contention in two seasons led by Allen, winning eight games in both seasons. This included a victory over Colorado State, where Allen led them to the win.
One of Allen’s most memorable moments came against Colorado State, when he guided the Cowboys 67 yards down the field to set up a game-winning touchdown. He threw for more than 125 yards in that contest, securing Wyoming’s bowl eligibility.
During his time at Wyoming, Allen set multiple records. This included ranking fifth in Wyoming history in career passing touchdowns and being named to the 2026 Second Team All-Mountain West.
“It is going to be a big day in the history of Wyoming Football. Josh Allen is the most high-profile ambassador the University of Wyoming has ever had. The National Football League is the most visible sports enterprise in history, and he is the best player in that league and that is pretty amazing in itself,” Wyoming’s athletic director Tom Burman said in a statement ahead of the jersey retirement.
This season, however, has been a difficult one for both fan bases. Following today’s loss, Wyoming dropped to 4-7, eliminating its bowl hopes. Colorado State, meanwhile, sits at 2-8 after parting ways with head coach Jay Norvell earlier in the year.
With the Rams taking on the Boise State Broncos tonight, Colorado State is predicted to finish the season without winning another game, according to PFSN’s playoff meter. Meanwhile, Wyoming is projected to win its final game.
