The New Orleans Saints were always heading towards a rebuild after legendary quarterback Drew Brees retired, but a 2-8 record in 2025 could still have been avoided. Mistakes are part of the job, but for Saints GM Mickey Loomis, there have been a good number that have set the organization back from getting competitive again.
Loomis’ removal from his GM role is highly unlikely, but a change could still occur, and the Saints may soon seek his replacement.
How a GM Change Could Happen in New Orleans
Again, Loomis being removed or fired is not going to happen. However, with age in mind, it may be time soon for the long-time GM in New Orleans to move on from his role.
Per Ari Meirov, this is what people around the league are thinking: “Within league circles, a lot of people have been asking about Mickey Loomis’ future because he is somebody that is turning 70 this year.”
Meriov noted that it is still unlikely, but the fact that conversations have taken place and that age will be a question for the foreseeable future. In addition, he also noted that this is “one to watch for sure at the end of the year” in New Orleans.

With this topic in mind, it is wise for the Saints to start looking for Loomis’ successor. The team is ranked 28th on PFSN’s Offense Impact with an impact score of 64.7.
Potential GM Options for the Saints
If Loomis does leave his GM role, there is a clear name in the Saints’ front office. Khai Harley, the Senior Vice President of Football Operations, is waiting for his chance to become a GM, and he has been under Loomis for years. Now, although this is the obvious situation for New Orleans, there is another direction the Saints could go with.

With Kellen Moore being the first-year HC in New Orleans and unable to select his GM when he was hired, this is his chance to do so. Moore was able to poach some coaches from the Philadelphia Eagles’ staff (where he worked last season) when the Saints hired him. So, looking at connections there, Eagles assistant GM Alec Halaby could be a perfect option.
Last offseason, Halaby was interviewed for the New York Jets GM position, and he is one of the league’s young, up-and-coming candidates. This could be the perfect way for the Saints to go towards the analytics-based future of the NFL.
