Rhett Lashlee and SMU managed to pull off an upset over the Miami Hurricanes, handing them their second loss of the season. The Mustangs took the ACC clash to overtime, where they secured a historic win over the No. 10-ranked side.
Today’s victory not only made history, but according to PFSN’s College Football Playoff Meter, also puts SMU back in the race for the ACC championship game. According to the meter, SMU has a 16.87% chance of reaching the championship game, while Miami is all but out of it.
Punishment Likely for SMU After Fans Storm the Field Following Historic Win Over Miami
In the aftermath of SMU’s thrilling victory, jubilant fans stormed the field — a celebration that could result in penalties for the program. This was SMU’s first win over an AP Top 10 team since 1980, with the Hurricanes being ranked No. 10 going into today’s game.
However, the Mustangs may now face repercussions for the postgame celebration. Earlier this season, Virginia fans rushed the field following their 46-38 double-overtime win over No. 8 Florida State, which resulted in a fine of nearly $50,000.

Lashlee guided SMU to the College Football Playoff last season in the team’s first year as an ACC member. He recently signed a new deal that extends his contract by two seasons through 2032. It also made him one of the highest-paid coaches in college football.
“SMU is a special place in our family. We are so excited for the opportunity to continue the process of building our program on the national stage.” Lashlee said in a release back in November 2024, when he first signed his new deal at SMU.
Under ACC policy, any team violating the conference’s field-storming rule faces a $50,000 fine for the first offense, which increases to $100,000 and $200,000 for subsequent incidents.
The money paid for a violation is allocated to the ACC’s Weaver-James-Corrigan-Swofford Postgraduate Scholarship account.
“The elevated expectations for event security plans in men’s and women’s basketball and football will require that only student-athletes, coaches, officials, and authorized personnel are allowed in the competition area before, during, and at the conclusion of any competition,” the ACC rules state. “Further, visiting team personnel and officials must have the opportunity to safely exit the competition area before spectators may access the competition area following a contest.
Despite that, after signing a head coach to one of the most expensive contracts in college football, SMU will likely be more than happy to pay the fine following today’s win. The Mustangs still have a miracle chance of making the CFB playoffs, with a 6.26% chance should they win the ACC.
