Holger Rune’s former coach, Patrick Mouratoglou, and his team from the Mouratoglou Tennis Academy extended their full support to the Dane after the tragic injury he sustained at the 2025 Stockholm Open. Rune and Mouratoglou worked together on and off from October 2022 to July 2024.
During the semifinals of the ATP 250 hard-court event in Sweden, Rune suffered a foot injury that forced him to withdraw from the tournament and ultimately caused him to end his season prematurely.
Holger Rune Receives Support From Former Coach Patrick Mouratoglou After His Injury in Stockholm
Rune was the top seed at the 2025 Stockholm Open, and he began his campaign in the second round after receiving a first-round bye. He won his opening match against Márton Fucsovics with a scoreline of 6-4, 6-4, and then defeated Tomás Martín Etcheverry 6-7(4), 6-3, 6-4 in the quarterfinals.
In the semifinals, the former World No. 4 faced Ugo Humbert. Rune was leading 6-4, 2-2 when he suffered a leg injury, which led to his retirement from the match. He later took to social media to reveal that he had fully ruptured his Achilles tendon at the proximal part, which will require surgery followed by rehabilitation.
In response to this injury, Mouratoglou shared a video message on social media, expressing support for Rune from himself and his team. He stated that they are entirely behind him and expressed confidence that Rune will bounce back and “surprise the world” with his comeback.
“Hi Holger, I’m really sorry for what happened to you, the Academy, and myself. I want you to know that we are 100% behind you during this difficult time, and we trust that you’re going to bounce back and surprise the world. Whatever you need, you know where to find your friends,” Mouratoglou said.

Following his campaign at the 2025 Stockholm Open, Rune was scheduled to compete at the 2025 Swiss Indoors in Basel. However, he had to withdraw from the tournament due to the injury he sustained in Stockholm.
Rune’s Mother, Aneke, Criticized ATP Schedule for Dane’s Injury
After Rune sustained the injury at the 2025 Stockholm Open, his mother, Aneke Rune, voiced her concerns in a letter to DR Sporten. She criticized the demanding ATP calendar and stated that her son’s injury was a result of the “fatigue” players experience due to the Tour’s rigorous schedule.
“Holger is the latest victim in the line of injured players. An injury that most often comes from fatigue. It is unacceptable that you do not take the players’ well-being into account. I don’t think it’s coherent, and I think that there is unrealistic pressure being put on the players, which in the worst case could lead to the use of inappropriate methods to keep up with the ATP calendar,” Aneke wrote.
In addition to Aneke, both Casper Ruud and Andy Roddick also expressed their criticisms of the ATP schedule.
