Benson’s season represents both promise and frustration for fantasy managers who invested in Arizona’s backfield. After assuming the starting role in Week 4 following James Conner’s season-ending injury, Benson managed a 57% snap share and produced 10.4 fantasy points in what amounted to an uninspiring but functional debut as the lead back. Unfortunately, Benson sustained a meniscus injury requiring surgery.
The Cardinals placed Benson on IR ahead of Week 5, sidelining him until at least Week 10. Benson was given a 4-6 week recovery timeline, which makes Weeks 11 or 12 a more realistic return scenario given the nature of knee injuries and Arizona’s cautious approach with player health.
The encouraging aspect for fantasy managers lies in Benson’s job security despite his brief tenure as the starter. The Cardinals clearly view him as their future at the position, and his return should immediately restore him to lead back duties.
Arizona’s struggles as a team create legitimate concerns about Benson’s weekly ceiling upon return, though. Fantasy managers competing for playoff positions may need the roster space, making him a reasonable drop candidate. However, those who can afford to stash him could benefit from mid-to-low RB2 production during fantasy playoffs when healthy contributors become scarce.
Bam Knight Fantasy Outlook
Knight’s ascension from the team’s fifth running back to starter represents one of the season’s most unlikely developments. When Arizona entered the year with Conner and Benson as the primary options and Emari Demercado handling passing-down duties, Knight barely registered on the depth chart. However, injuries created opportunity, and Knight capitalized when Michael Carter failed to impress in his audition as the replacement starter.
Knight’s 13 opportunities in his first game as the lead back expanded to 18 in his second contest, demonstrating the coaching staff’s growing confidence in his abilities. While Knight hasn’t been spectacular, he has provided the stability that Carter couldn’t deliver, allowing him to maintain his grip on the starting role.

Coming out of Arizona’s bye week, Knight should remain the clear favorite for the majority of touches in what projects as a committee approach.
Knight’s fantasy value depends heavily on touchdown production given Arizona’s offensive limitations and his modest efficiency metrics. His role as the primary goal-line option provides weekly upside that makes him rosterable despite the team’s struggles.
The timeline of his relevance extends until Benson’s return, likely providing another couple of weeks of RB3 value for fantasy managers. His floor remains concerning, but the volume and red-zone opportunities create enough weekly ceiling to justify a roster spot for teams dealing with injuries and bye weeks during the challenging midseason stretch.
Michael Carter Fantasy Outlook
Carter’s Cardinals tenure illustrates the harsh reality of NFL opportunity and execution. Despite posting 18.3 fantasy points in Week 5 when given his shot as the lead back, the performance wasn’t sufficient to maintain his starting role. The coaching staff’s quick pivot to Knight the following week sent a clear message about their evaluation of Carter’s long-term viability as a featured option.

Carter’s role has steadily diminished since losing the starting job, playing fewer than 40% of snaps in both Weeks 6 and 7. Even when Demercado’s injury in Week 6 created an opening for passing-down work, Carter’s involvement proved temporary. Arizona’s decision to hand those responsibilities to D’Ernest Johnson in Week 7 after a full week of preparation effectively eliminated Carter’s path to meaningful fantasy relevance.
Carter’s skill set limitations become apparent when analyzing his usage patterns. He’s essentially a poor man’s version of Kenneth Walker III. Carter is not heavily involved in the passing game and doesn’t get goal line carries. This combination makes it nearly impossible for him to generate consistent fantasy points regardless of opportunity.
The only scenario that makes Carter viable involves Knight suffering an injury, but even this path faces obstacles. Such an opportunity wouldn’t arise until Week 10 at the earliest, which coincides with Benson’s potential return timeline. Fantasy managers can safely drop Carter, as his window for relevance appears to have closed permanently barring multiple additional injuries to Arizona’s backfield.
