ESPN NFL Insider Reveals Steelers’ Potential QB Plans for 2026 Season

ESPN NFL insider Jeremy Fowler revealed who the Pittsburgh Steelers are planning to be their QB for the 2026 season. Find out their plans here.

The Pittsburgh Steelers are off to a great start in 2025, but had a tough game in Week 7, falling to the Cincinnati Bengals. They have to bounce back after blowing the opportunity to put the division out of reach and keeping the Bengals, Ravens, and Browns in it. Regardless, the Steelers are in a good position to make the playoffs and even make a deep run at the playoffs.

With veteran Aaron Rodgers at the helm, the Steelers are playing well and might even be interested in a potential reunion beyond this season.

NFL Insider Reveals Update on Pittsburgh’s QB Situation

Rodgers is leading the Steelers to a hot start and is forcing the team to discuss whether a return might be in the cards. Rodgers has been speculating about his future and retirement for several years, but has returned to play each year.

NFL insider Jeremy Fowler revealed that the Steelers are interested in bringing Rodgers back to be their quarterback for the 2026 season.

Rodgers knows what it takes to win in the NFL with a Super Bowl under his belt. The Steelers have been itching for a quarterback that can deliver them playoff wins and Rodgers has that pedigree. He’s operating their offense at a level that is winning them games, and despite his age, the Steelers are ready to float the option of another year at him.

The caveat in Pittsburgh’s plan is that Rodgers has been open about this likely being his last season. With the years adding up and the continuous toll on the body, Rodgers’ retirement is fast approaching and one last run in 2025 might be the end. While time will tell if Rodgers wants a return, the Steelers reportedly do.

The Steelers have the 10th-ranked offense in PFSN’s Offense Impact score with a grade of 81.8. With a solid rushing attack, an elite pass-catcher in DK Metcalf, and Rodgers slinging the rock, the Steelers offense has scored 20+ points in all but one of their games.

Rodgers is the 14th-ranked quarterback in PFSN’s QB Impact score with a grade of 79.0. He’s been more than serviceable for the Steelers, and his success is why they want to potentially have him back. They haven’t adequately replaced Ben Roethlisberger since his retirement, and having someone who can provide strong quarterback play is essential to maximizing their championship chances.

Looking ahead, the Steelers still need an answer after Rodgers. They drafted Ohio State QB Will Howard in Round 6 of the 2025 NFL Draft. As of now, he looks like the likely successor to Rodgers for the long run.

The Steelers might think that Howard can benefit from another year sitting behind Rodgers before handing him the keys, while bringing Rodgers back would allow them to look for other potential successors.

However, for now, the Steelers must focus on the present. They fumbled away the golden opportunity to distance themselves from their rivals and now have to get back on track ahead of a demanding upcoming schedule. Making the playoffs and a postseason run must be priority before worrying about bringing Rodgers back for another season.
