Where Are the Two Teams Standing Heading Into Week 9?
After losing 17-23 in overtime to Missouri last weekend, Auburn is currently 0-3 in the SEC. This has squarely placed its head coach, Freeze, on the hot seat. The team’s inability to close out games has been a recurring theme.
In the recent weeks, Auburn lost one-score contests to Texas A&M, Oklahoma, and Missouri. Their only wins this season have come against unranked teams like Baylor, Ball State, and South Alabama.
Despite their narrow games in recent weeks, Auburn has still struggled on one side of the ball. According to PFSN’s offense impact metrics, the Tigers have one of the worst offenses of any top SEC team. Currently, they sit 234th overall. Meanwhile, their defense has taken the brunt of the responsibility. This year, they rank as one of the best defenses in the SEC at 11th overall.
Meanwhile, the Razorbacks are still searching for their first win under head coach Bobby Petrino. Following a 56-13 loss to Notre Dame, the Razorbacks decided to fire head coach Sam Pittman.

Pitman was fired after failing to break into the top tier of SEC teams, with an overall record of 32-34 that kept the Razorbacks firmly in mediocrity. Under Petrino, they have taken two ranked teams to close-score games. They lost out in narrow games to both No.17 Tennessee and No.3 Texas A&M.
While the Razorbacks’ offense has lagged behind, ranking 194th overall, they have one weapon they could potentially use against Auburn’s top defense. Running back Mike Washington Jr. currently ranks 13th among the top 20 in the nation.
Meanwhile, Auburn has its own weapon at running back with Jeremiah Cobb coming in the Top 10 at 7th, setting up a massive competition between the two over the weekend.
