Frances Tiafoe Steps Away From Tour Following String of Setbacks

Frances Tiafoe withdraws from major tennis tournaments following five-match losing streak and disappointing 2025 season results, stepping away from tour.

American tennis player Frances Tiafoe has ended his 2025 season early, a decision that comes after a challenging period in his professional career. The 27-year-old, who reached a career-high ranking of World No. 10 in June 2023, has struggled for consistency, culminating in a five-match losing streak and a drop in the ATP rankings.

In response to these setbacks, Tiafoe has withdrawn from his remaining scheduled tournaments for the year, opting to step away from the tour to regroup.

What Did Frances Tiafoe Do Following Consecutive Losses?

Tiafoe’s most recent ATP Tour victories came during a successful 2023 campaign. His last title wins occurred at two different tournaments that year – the U.S. Men’s Clay Court Championship in Houston where he defeated Tomás Martín Etcheverry 7-6(1), 7-6(6) in April, and the Stuttgart Open where he overcame Jan-Lennard Struff 4-6, 7-6(1), 7-6(8) in a dramatic final, saving a match point in the deciding tiebreak.

Since those triumphs in 2023, Tiafoe has faced a series of disappointing results. His difficulties became pronounced during the 2025 season, where he compiled a 26-23 win-loss record. The American experienced a particularly rough stretch leading up to his most recent tournament appearance, suffering five consecutive defeats.

The losing streak began with a third-round exit at the 2025 US Open, where he fell to Jan-Lennard Struff in straight sets 6-4, 6-3, 7-6(4). His struggles continued during Davis Cup qualifying, where he lost both singles matches – first to Jiri Lehecka 6-3, 6-2, then to Jakub Mensik 6-1, 6-4. At the Japan Open, Tiafoe suffered a first-round defeat against Marton Fucsovics 3-6, 6-1, 7-5. His most recent match ended in disappointment at the Shanghai Masters, where Germany’s Yannick Hanfmann defeated him 6-7(11), 6-2, 6-1 in the second round.

Following this stretch of poor results, Tiafoe decided to withdraw from multiple upcoming tournaments. The American withdrew from the Vienna ATP 500, Paris Masters 1000, and Brussels ATP 250 events.

According to tournament organizers, he has opted out of the Metz ATP 250 as well, which represents the final tournament of the regular season.

The withdrawals mark a significant step for Tiafoe, who has dropped to World No. 28 in the rankings after reaching a career-high of No. 10 in June 2023. With limited opportunities remaining in 2025, the American faces the challenge of regrouping and finding his form as he looks ahead to future tournaments.
