Trevor Lawrence’s Late Heroics Lift Jaguars Past Chiefs in Thrilling Finish
Trevor Lawrence turned a near disaster into a highlight moment Monday night, tripping at the snap before scrambling for a 1-yard touchdown with 23 seconds left to seal the Jacksonville Jaguars’ 31-28 victory over the Kansas City Chiefs.
“What a crazy, crazy finish,” said Lawrence, who celebrated his 26th birthday with teammates after the win.
The Jaguars (4-1) snapped an eight-game losing streak against the Chiefs (2-3) and matched last season’s win total. Patrick Mahomes had a final chance with 16 seconds left but couldn’t convert, ending Kansas City’s 23-game streak of wins when leading by 14 or more points.
According to PFSN’s Offense Impact (OFFi), Jacksonville earned an Offense Impact Score of 78.8 (C+), ranking 11th overall under head coach Liam Coen and coordinator Udinski. Kansas City, led by Andy Reid and Matt Nagy, scored 84.3 (B), ranked seventh in the league.
PFSN’s Quarterback Impact (QBi) told a similar story. Patrick Mahomes posted a QB Impact Score of 77.4 (C+), ranking 17th. At the same time, Lawrence logged 68.5 (D+), placing 29th. Still, Lawrence completed 18 of 25 passes for 221 yards, ran for 54, and accounted for three touchdowns.
“It was cool for us to go take it and have to win it at the end,” Lawrence quipped.
Right guard Patrick Mekari accidentally stepped on his foot before the game-winning play, prompting Lawrence to think about “throwing it away” before spotting an open lane. “He wasn’t going to lose,” Jaguars coach Coen said.
Devin Lloyd added a pivotal 99-yard interception return, the longest by a linebacker in regular-season history. Rookie Travis Hunter also impressed, making a 44-yard grab and a 12-yard catch-and-run.
