Dan Lanning and the Oregon Ducks have gotten off to an outstanding start this season. The Ducks opened the season with a 59-13 victory over Montana State and an imposing 69-3 win over the Oklahoma State Cowboys. After Oklahoma State’s loss to Tulsa and the subsequent firing, combined with Oregon’s sluggish 34-14 victory over the Northwestern Wildcats, some began to question just how good the Ducks were. However, after an easy 41-7 win over the arch-rival Oregon State Beavers in the Civil War, the Ducks held off a late rally by the previously third-ranked Penn State Nittany Lions on Saturday, winning in overtime 30-24 to improve to 5-0.
It was the Ducks’ most impressive win of the season and best victory since defeating Penn State in the Big Ten Championship Game last season. After the game, Lanning showed just how happy he was with the victory.
Oregon Coach Dan Lanning Caught NBC Reporter Kathryn Tappen A Little Off-Guard With His Celebration After Victory Over Penn State
Following the game, Lanning headed to midfield for his postgame interview with NBC Reporter Kathryn Tappen. Before the interview could begin, Lanning let out a massive scream, celebrating one of the biggest wins by any team thus far this season and one of the biggest wins of Lanning’s career.
Lanning joined The Triple Option and was asked about what they referred to as the “scream heard round the world.”
“We always say 60 minutes or as long as it takes,” Lanning explained. “It took a little bit longer in this game. We went into overtime, but that was I guess I don’t know. I was just jacked. I was jacked, man.”
The funniest part of it was how he seemed to scare Tappen.
“There’s a lot of emotions in that moment,” Lanning said. “You want to you want to scream, you want to cry, you I don’t know. It that’s like that’s why you do this job. Yeah. You know, that’s why you do this job to get to uh enjoy some of those moments. So, it was fun.”
Lanning knows this was a huge accomplishment, and you can see him waving his arms as he couldn’t contain his excitement.
“It was a we did it feeling like it was uh it was like, okay, we accomplished it,” Lanning told The Triple Option. “And like I said, I’ I’d really set my mind in that game um that, you know, regardless of what happens, I’m super proud of how we played.”
“It was just a special moment. It was fun for our guys.”
Lanning’s Ducks have a PFSN Defensive Impact grade of 83.8 while the offense has a grade of 87.5.
The now second-ranked Ducks will enjoy a bye week before a 3:30 ET showdown with the eighth-ranked Indiana Hoosiers on October 11.
